We raised two children, travelled together, played tennis, drank wine with friends and planned to spend retirement sailing around the Greek islands. Then one morning, I returned from yoga and found him collapsed on the kitchen floor. The stroke didn’t kill him. But it took away almost everything that made him the man I had married. At first, I gladly became his carer. I helped him dress, brought him meals and placed a small bell beside his bed so he could call whenever he needed me. Soon, that bell controlled my entire life.
