AFTER 43 YEARS OF MARRIAGE, I WALKED INTO MY HUSBAND’S BEDROOM WITH A CUP OF TEA… AND SAID THE WORDS THAT WOULD DESTROY OUR FAMILY For most of our marriage, Martin and I had the kind of life people envied. We raised two children, travelled together, played tennis, drank wine with friends and planned to spend retirement sailing around the Greek islands. Then one morning, I returned from yoga and found him collapsed on the kitchen floor. The stroke didn’t kill him. But it took away almost everything that made him the man I had married. At first, I gladly became his carer. I helped him dress, brought him meals and placed a small bell beside his bed so he could call whenever he needed me. Soon, that bell controlled my entire life.
