‘Bones’ Star Reveals One On-Set Joke That Embarrassed the Cast of the Fan-Favorite Procedural
The Hart Hanson series Bones has a very dedicated fan base. Premiering in 2005, the procedural introduced audiences to Temperance Brennan (aka, Bones), played by Emily Deschanel. The character is an anthropologist, forensic anthropologist, and kinesiologist and…well, dedicated to bones. Get it? Her relationship with Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) captivated fans and earned the series a 12-year run, ending in 2017. Now, all these years later, fans still love hearing stories about the cast. When the cast reunited for the Bones: 20th Anniversary Retrospective panel, at the Televerse Festival, we learned a lot about on-set pranks.
During the panel, Boreanaz began to reveal some of the pranks the cast used to all do together. Or more like, Boreanaz used to do to his fellow cast mates. And they all revolve around fart jokes. “I used to always put a fart machine in the trailers, a whoopee cushion on Michaela [Conlin’s] chair,” Boreanaz said on the panel. He laughed, going on to say “Oh my God, she was like, ‘David, what?’” Michaela Conlin played Angela Montenegro on the series. “It was a leather chair, and [Conlin] had jeans on, and it’s like, ‘This is perfect. It’s going to hit. It’s going to rip,’” Boreanaz said.
The prank got so elaborate that Dr. Camille Saroyan’s actress, Tamara Taylor, said that her own mother sent the cast a fart machine. Deschanel went on to talk about how the prank elevated, saying, “First it was the whoopee cushion, then we got the fart machine. They were remote-controlled. There were different sounds.” But the shocking part? Hanson revealed that it all ended up in the show notes and was reported to the executives. “Oh, everything is documented,” Hanson said. “Reason for overages: fart machines.”
But Who Was the Biggest Prankster on the Set of ‘Bones’?

This isn’t the first time that the cast has talked about pranks. In a 2019 interview with PEOPLE, Deschanel shared that the biggest prankster on set was Boreanaz, and that everyone had the ability to be pranked, guest stars included. Boreanaz told a story about the time that he pranked Luc Robitaille during his cameo on Bones. Robitaille was supposed to have two lines but Boreanaz had them give him a two-page monologue instead.
“He’s reading his pages, and he’s slowly sweating because it’s a two-page monologue,” Boreanaz said. “And then we go to rehearse, I’m like, ‘Really sorry. Just do the best you can.’ And he starts reading these lines. He’s like, ‘Oh, f— this! Boreanaz, you f—— screwed me, man,'” he said.
