BRAZEN THUGS STEAL CHINESE TAKEAWAY’S “LUCKY” POTTED PLANT AFTER 15 YEARS OUTSIDE THE SHOP — THE SECURITY CAMERA MOMENT THAT LEFT THE OWNER HEARTBROKEN What was once just a quiet corner outside a local Chinese takeaway — a simple potted plant that had sat at the entrance since the day the business opened 15 years ago — has now become the centre of a shocking theft that’s left the community stunned. The plant, long considered a small symbol of luck and tradition by the owner, had quietly watched over thousands of customers coming and going over the years. But it’s one moment captured on CCTV that has everyone talking — the split-second pause before the thieves pick it up, as if weighing it up, before walking off with something that meant far more to the shop than it looked. That brief act, now widely shared, has turned a small local incident into something deeply personal for the owner…

SATAY AWAY

Moment brazen thugs nick Chinese takeaway’s lucky potted plant that’s been there since it opened 15 years ago

THIS is the shocking moment brazen thugs steal a Chinese takeaway’s lucky potted plant in broad daylight.

The “money tree” had been a fixture of Bill’s Kitchen in Chatham, Kent, after it was given to owners as a gift over 15 years ago.

Shocking CCTV footage shows a woman entering the popular restaurant before menacingly approaching the tree.

Another woman, seen in a parked car outside, can be seen gesturing and pointing towards the tree before the first woman goes up to the counter.

A man then quickly enters, steals the tree and hurries outside to stuff it in the back seat of the motor.

The first woman follows closely behind before they drive away.

No members of staff saw the brazen theft as they were all inside the kitchen at the time, takeaway owner, Hongyan Zhu, told KentOnline.

She added the door to the restaurant had been kept open due to the heat.

Hongyan said: “The whole thing only took a few minutes. We were busy in the kitchen, so we didn’t hear anything.

“They didn’t order anything – they just came in, took the plant, and left.”

The Chinese money tree, known as Pachira aquatica, is a popular plant often associated with good luck, wealth and prosperity.

It is commonly kept in homes and businesses, particularly in Chinese culture, as a symbol of wealth and fortune.

Ms Zhu reported the brazen theft to the police and said the plant had a deep sentimental value.

She said it had been a “special opening gift from my father, wishing us good fortune” and had been there since she had taken over the business.

“I’ve taken great care of it over the years. It’s very hard for me to accept,” Ms Zhu added.

“I just hope the person will return it, because its value cannot really be measured.”

The Sun has contacted Kent Police for comment.
