Moment brazen thugs nick Chinese takeaway’s lucky potted plant that’s been there since it opened 15 years ago
THIS is the shocking moment brazen thugs steal a Chinese takeaway’s lucky potted plant in broad daylight.
The “money tree” had been a fixture of Bill’s Kitchen in Chatham, Kent, after it was given to owners as a gift over 15 years ago.
Shocking CCTV footage shows a woman entering the popular restaurant before menacingly approaching the tree.
Another woman, seen in a parked car outside, can be seen gesturing and pointing towards the tree before the first woman goes up to the counter.
A man then quickly enters, steals the tree and hurries outside to stuff it in the back seat of the motor.
The first woman follows closely behind before they drive away.
No members of staff saw the brazen theft as they were all inside the kitchen at the time, takeaway owner, Hongyan Zhu, told KentOnline.
She added the door to the restaurant had been kept open due to the heat.
Hongyan said: “The whole thing only took a few minutes. We were busy in the kitchen, so we didn’t hear anything.
“They didn’t order anything – they just came in, took the plant, and left.”
The Chinese money tree, known as Pachira aquatica, is a popular plant often associated with good luck, wealth and prosperity.
It is commonly kept in homes and businesses, particularly in Chinese culture, as a symbol of wealth and fortune.
Ms Zhu reported the brazen theft to the police and said the plant had a deep sentimental value.
She said it had been a “special opening gift from my father, wishing us good fortune” and had been there since she had taken over the business.
“I’ve taken great care of it over the years. It’s very hard for me to accept,” Ms Zhu added.
“I just hope the person will return it, because its value cannot really be measured.”
The Sun has contacted Kent Police for comment.
