In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Yellowstone fandom, CBS has quietly stripped the “Y” from the upcoming spinoff, rebranding the series simply as “Marshals.” While the network claims the “Y” was always “silent,” fans are reading between the lines: Is this the end of Taylor Sheridan’s connection to the Dutton legacy? Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is officially trading his ranching gear for a badge as a U.S. Marshal, taking his Navy SEAL skills to the front lines of Montana’s most dangerous criminals. But there’s a darker cloud hanging over this new chapter—Monica is nowhere to be found. Is Kayce running away from a tragedy? Or is he finally becoming the “protector” his father never could be? One thing is for certain: the West is about to get a lot more violent. March 1st changes everything.

Kayce Dutton Starts a New Chapter: ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Drops the “Y” and Rebrands as Marshals

Marshals is centered around Luke Grimes‘ Kayce Dutton. With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.

The Marshals trailer, released on November 24, shows the first look at Brecken Merrill and Gil Birmingham reprising their Yellowstone roles as Tate Dutton and Thomas Rainwater, respectively, but there’s no sign of Kelsey Asbille‘s Monica Dutton, Kayce’s wife.

Marshals premieres in March on CBS. Here’s everything we know about the new drama.

When does the Kayce Dutton Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, come out?
Marshals premieres on Sunday, March 1, at 8/7c on CBS. Here’s CBS’s Sunday primetime midseason schedule:

7:00-8:00 p.m. ET: 60 Minutes
8:00-9:00 p.m. ET: Marshals
9:00-10:00 p.m. ET: Tracker (#1 Series, new time period)
10:00-11:00 p.m. ET: Watson (new night and time period)
Is there a Marshals trailer?
Yes. The first official Marshals trailer was released on November 24. Before that, two short teasers said Kayce was “grappling with some skeletons I’d like to keep in my closet.”

Kayce is still wearing his wedding ring in the Marshals trailer, but he’s also seen mourning at a grave. Could this be a hint that Monica is being killed off? Given that his voiceover in that shot is about losing his parents and brothers, perhaps it’s a grave he made for Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), who was killed by Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) in the Yellowstone series finale, with his body being dumped at the train station.

The Cast of “Yellowstone” is Back

The trailer opens at the East Camp of what was formerly the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch. Kayce sold the Dutton land to Rainwater in Yellowstone‘s final episodes. His one condition was that he and his family could continue living on East Camp. The new trailer shows Kayce, Tate, and Rainwater, but no signs of Monica. Kayce is struggling with his family’s legacy and is looking for a new start with a career as a U.S. Marshal. Could he be grieving the loss of his wife?

The new footage introduces Kayce’s new fellow marshals, played by Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Logan Marshall-Green, and Tatanka Means. Things get increasingly violent in the footage, which ends with Rainwater saying, “Duttons are all born with a killer instinct, but you’re not a killer, Kayce. You’re a protector.”

In a previous teaser from October 20, Kayce says, “I’m changing paths. I’m trying to find a new beginning.” He was still wearing his wedding ring in that video, implying that he and Monica are still together despite Asbille’s absence from the Marshals cast list.

Who is in the Marshals cast?
In addition to Grimes, Marshals is bringing three Yellowstone stars into the fold for the CBS spinoff. There’s Merrill as Tate, Birmingham as Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.

Merrill, Birmingham, Brings Plenty, and Marshall-Green, series regulars are Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, and Tatanka Means as Miles. The trio is playing Marshals, Variety reports. Brett Cullen will appear in the recurring role of Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s time in the military.

Is Kelsey Asbille returning as Monica Dutton in Marshals?
Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille as Kayce and Monica in ‘Yellowstone’
With Grimes reprising his role, and with the show set in Montana like the original series, it’d be safe to assume that Kayce’s family would be part of the story. Grimes previously told People that there will be some “familiar faces” in the cast, as well as new ones. But Asbille’s absence from the August 26 casting announcement and the new trailer raises questions about Monica’s presence in the spinoff. Of course, it’s still possible she could appear, but fans will have to wait and see if her casting is announced.

Yellowstone ended with Kayce selling the Dutton ranch to Tom Rainwater, giving the land back to the indigenous people of the Broken Rock Reservation community, of which Monica and Tate are descendants. Kayce and Monica were still married by Yellowstone‘s end.

Is Taylor Sheridan making the Kayce Dutton Yellowstone spinoff?
Taylor Sheridan created every show in the Yellowstone universe and wrote them all on his own, but he’s not in the same roles for Marshals, but he is still connected to the series.

Spencer Hudnut is the showrunner and executive producer. Hudnut was previously the showrunner for CBS’s SEAL Team. Marshals is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios with Sheridan, along with David C. Glasser as executive producer for 101 Studios, as well as John Linson, Art Linson, Hudnut, Luke Grimes, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

The first episode is written by Spencer Hudnut and directed by Greg Yaitanes.

Why is Kayce Dutton getting a spinoff?
Grimes himself was surprised by the development. The idea for Marshals was pitched to Grimes about four months after Yellowstone‘s final season wrapped filming, he recently told People, and he was confused at first about how there was more story to tell about his character when his and his family’s storyline was left in such a place of completeness and peace at the end of Yellowstone.

“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” Grimes shared, saying that “if it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

Grimes added that “nobody wanted [Yellowstone] to be over” and that saying goodbye to Kayce was like saying goodbye to family. “I don’t think the fans wanted it to be over. A lot of us actors kind of didn’t want it to be over, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it to be over,” he said. It seems that’s the prevailing reason why Marshals and the Beth and Rip spinoff are happening.
