Warning: This article contains spoilers from Stranger Things season 5, episode 4, “Sorcerer.”
When Netflix dropped the Stranger Things season 5 trailer in October, the one that revealed our first clear look at Vecna 2.0, actor Jamie Campbell Bower posted a one-word response on Twitter: “Snatched.”
“Have you seen his nails?” Bower comically responds to Entertainment Weekly when asked about that tweet. “My nails and my waist are looking so good. I’m so happy she’s had her glow up.”
Bower, also a veteran of Mortal Instruments, Twilight, and Harry Potter, breaks down Vecna’s big entrance in the Stranger Things 5, Vol. 1 finale. The infamous figure emerges out of hiding to make easy work of the military operation in Hawkins as Demogorgons ransack the base.
The actor wanted to ensure that Vecna looked “as badass as possible” when he finally emerges from the Upside Down portal in episode 4, noting how he also saw the antagonist as a “very considered, calm, powerful figure.”

“I felt like I was a wrestler going into the ring, but also having those moments of release, like with the fire,” Bower says, referring to the moment a hazmat suit-clad soldier shoots off a flamethrower at Vecna. “Even that little moment when he pushes the flamethrower back, making sure that every single ounce of energy was going into that moment.”
He had a different approach for the moment between Vecna and Winona Ryder’s Joyce, who tries to protect Will during one of his psychic episodes. “I really just wanted that to be super casual,” he continues. “She’s like, ‘You stay away from my son!’ And he’s just like, ‘Shut the f— up’ and just throws her to one side.”
Vecna is clearly more powerful than he was in season 4, and his physical look reflects that. Bower explains how the new look yielded a more collaborative relationship between him and the prosthetics department, led by Barrie Gower, who’s also known for creating looks for Game of Thrones.
There is one moment during Vecna’s Vol. 1 rampage that seemed to channel the Night King on that HBO drama — when Vecna raises his arms to resurrect the fallen Demogorgons.
“It actually wasn’t a reference for me in that action sequence,” Bower shares. “Maybe that particular physicality could have come from when we were shooting [season] 4 and Vecna is hanging in the attic.”
He adds, “There was a particular moment where I wanted to do something that was a reference to Hellraiser 3, and we tried it. I was really excited about it. I did it and I was like, ‘Did it look sick?’ And it was just silence. They’re like, ‘You might want to come and look at it.’ And it looked awful! So I was like, ‘Well, I’m never gonna say anything ever again.'”

In addition to being “snatched,” Vecna reads Will (Noah Schnapp) to filth before sashaying away, noting how weak and insignificant the Byers boy is to him. Is Vecna just Henry’s drag persona? We’re still waiting for the judges to deliberate.
Bower comments, “The relationship between Vecna and Eleven [Millie Bobby Brown], he very much saw them as equals. She was his sister. He genuinely believed that they could build a better world together. Whereas with Will, he’s just a toy, he’s just a play thing.”
Now that Will is able to channel Vecna’s powers, “It’s an irritating byproduct of the fact that he’s just a means to an end,” Bower says.
Wait till they lip sync for their lives!
