M23 closed at Gatwick Airport over serious crash right before the Easter break sparking misery for holidaymakers
A MAJOR UK motorway has been closed after a serious traffic collision – sparking massive delays for holidaymakers ahead of the Easter break.
The M23 northbound is currently closed between Junction 10, Crawley and Junction 9, Gatwick.
Emergency services scrambled to the chaotic scene in the early hours of this morning in the wake of the crash.
National Highways has warned that due to the serious nature of the collision, the road is likely to be closed for several hours as crews work at the scene.
Huge queues have formed on the busy road as commuters and holidaymakers battle with the lengthy delays.
A diversion has been put in place with motorists advised to avoid using the closed road.
National Highways shared news of the closure on social media, saying: “M23 northbound is CLOSED between J10 Crawley and J9 Gatwick
“This is due to a serious collision. Emergency services are on scene.
“This is likely to be in place for several hours.”
A spokesperson for National Highways added: “National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene and assisting the emergency services with traffic management.
“Due to the serious nature of the collision the road is expected to remain closed for several hours.”
Meanwhile, holidaymakers were seen queuing at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 as the Easter holiday rush got underway.
Dozens of passengers with suitcases have pictured lining the check-in hall of the airport ahead of the long weekend.
