Kate Middleton was rebuffed by Princess Anne ahead of the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday—but not for the reason you might think.

While Prince William and his aunt greeted each other with a kiss on either cheek, the Princess Royal didn’t do the same with Middleton.

“There was no way Princess Anne was going to attempt a kiss under a hat like the Princess of Wales’s,” reporter Rebecca English of the Daily Mail captioned a clip of the interaction.

Middleton selected a navy Catherine Walker coatdress for the occasion, pairing it with matching suede Gianvito Rossi stilettos and a wide-brimmed Sean Barrett chapeau. The Princess of Wales also added on a five-strand pearl necklace by Susan Caplan, along with a pair of Queen Elizabeth II’s earrings.

The annual church service brings together representatives from the 56 nations that make up the Commonwealth and is held on the second Monday in March. Notably, the event wasn’t broadcasted live on BBC this year due to “funding challenges,” per Hello!, marking the first time it had not been on television since 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his message this year, King Charles III—who leads the Commonwealth—warned of the “increasing pressures of conflict,” adding that this is a “time of great challenge and great possibility.”

“It is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed,” he said during his address.

“Working together, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to stand as a force for good—grounded in community, committed to the kind of restorative sustainability that has a return on investment, enriched by culture, steadfast in its care for our planet, and united in friendship and in the service of its people,” His Majesty continued.
