“OUR HEARTS ARE OFFICIALLY IN DANGER — HEATED RIVALRY IS GETTING A THIRD BOOK, AND FANS ARE ALREADY EMOTIONALLY UNRAVELING” It started as a whisper in fandom spaces — then suddenly, it was real. The beloved hockey romance Heated Rivalry is officially getting a third book, and longtime readers are admitting they’re not even remotely prepared. For years, fans have lived with the emotional aftermath of stolen glances, slow-burn tension, and a love story that hurt in the best possible way. Now, the promise of returning to that world has reopened everything. Social media exploded within minutes of the announcement, with readers confessing they’re excited, terrified, and already bracing for emotional damage. What’s fueling the frenzy isn’t just the continuation — it’s the fear of what will be explored next: unresolved feelings, fragile peace, and the kind of intimacy that only hits harder the second time around. One fan summed it up perfectly: “I survived the first two books. I don’t think I’ll survive this one.” And judging by the reaction, they’re not alone.

The vice grip in which Heated Rivalry has us, our besties and the collective zeitgeist right now is showing no sign of relenting. Nor would we wish it so.

Hot off the heels of their Golden Globes appearance, which once again sent the internet and even fellow celebrities into meltdown, we’ve received news of another Heated Rivalry sequel.

For those who have clearly been living in an internet blackhole the past month, the queer ice hockey romance is based on the book of the same name by author Rachel Reid, and centres on characters  Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.

Heated Rivalry' Stars Reveal They Have 3-Season Contracts

Played by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie respectively, the surprise success story (surprise, because the series wasn’t scheduled for release beyond Canada until fan demand saw a global takeover) is already confirmed for a season two.

It’s expected the sophomore season will follow Ilya and Shane’s second book (the sixth in the collection, The Long Game) finds the couple further along in their relationship — still secretive at first — and dealing with deeper emotional stakes as they navigate long-term commitment.

Now, Reid along with publisher of the Game Changers series, HarperCollins, have announced a third book on our favourite couple is officially coming.

Heated Rivalry still

Titled Unrivaled, a clear play on the Heated Rivalry theme, the upcoming novel will mark Reid’s seventh book of the series and is already available for pre-order ahead of a September 29, 2026 release.

The official synopsis reads: “For the first time in their professional hockey careers, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander have nothing to hide. After more than a decade of keeping their love secret, they’re out, married, and even playing on the same team. The support has been incredible. Most of the time.”

“While fans celebrate them, others in the hockey world are still reeling from the reveal. A growing backlash—led by the popular hockey podcast Top Shelf and the #TakeBackHockey movement—is making its presence felt.It goes on to add: “Standing together in the light was everything Shane and Ilya ever wanted. Now, they may be facing their biggest challenge yet.”

While this makes us a tad nervous for the future of our ice hockey darlings, it leaves the promise of more Heated Rivalry seasons to come.
