It’s all happening on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. The Party finally knows what Vecna is up to and think they have a fool-proof plan to defeat himOpens in a new tab. But, at Nerdist, we feel like there’s a huge gaping hole in that plan that Stranger Things 5, Volume 2 never addresses… And that one little detail might cost our heroes a potential victory against Vecna (and possibly some lives). The Upside Down is stuck in time from the night Eleven accidentally created that interdimensional bridgeOpens in a new tab. So, in theory, the team should be able to find Dr. Brenner’s amplification bath/sensory deprivation tank waiting for her, the same way it was on November 6, 1983, when she made contact with Vecna/One in the Abyss and created the Upside Down. But there’s just one problem there… There is no water in the Upside Down on Stranger Things. So how will Eleven be able to amplify her powers to destroy Vecna? Gulp. It seems like The Party is making a huge mistake in their plan to defeat Vecna.

There Is No Water in the Upside Down

Maybe you’ve never thought about it, but it turns out that Stranger Things has made it very clear throughout its seasons that there is no water in the Upside Down. We first learn this right at the beginning of Stranger Things, when we see Barb pulled into the Upside Down version of Steve Harrington’s pool in season one. The pool, of course, is empty. Because the Upside Down does not retain water from our world. Like Steve’s pool, Dr. Brenner’s bath/sensory deprivation chamber might have been full of water in the real world, but in Stranger Things‘ Upside Down, they’ll find it empty. At least, that’s what Stranger Things has led us to believe so far.

But Stranger Things actually goes out of its way to underscore this point to us. In Stranger Things 4, Steve gets pulled in through “Water Gate,” a gate created in Hawkins’ Lovers’ Lake after the death of basketball player, Patrick, in the water as he chased Eddie Munson. Steve swims down to examine the gate because he’s the strongest swimmer on the team, but once the Upside Down pulls him in… Yep, you guessed it. There’s no water in the Upside Down version of Lovers’ Lake on Stranger Things, because there is no water, artificial or natural, in the Upside Down.

Not One Person Brings Up This Mistake In Their Plan to Defeat Vecna in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

Even if there is somehow water in the Upside Down on Stranger Things, in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, our heroes don’t know that for a fact, and neither do we. And so, as they meticulously plan for their final battle against Vecna, it seems like a big mistake not to mention the potential lack of water that might exist to fill Eleven’s bath/sensory deprivation tank in the Upside Down. But no one brings it up, and that feels like a major oversight.

We Do Not See the Party Bringing Water Into the Upside Down on Their Way to Defeat Vecna

But, hey, it’s show, don’t tell, right? Do we see The Party preparing water to bring with them into the Upside Down on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2? You know, just in case every other instance of there being no water in the Upside Down hold up? Well, we see the group gathering a lot of materials as they prepare to head into the wormhole for their last stand against Vecna… But nope, we don’t see any water coming along on this trip into the Upside Down. And they’d probably need a good amount of it too, so it’s not like it’s something we can easily miss.

Will Not Considering the Lack of Water in the Upside Down Cost Our Heroes?

No water for Eleven’s bath/sensory deprivation tank in the Upside Down means no amplification of her powers against Vecna. And with Vecna already on his home turf and literally trying to collide dimensions, Eleven will need all the power she can get.

It’s a slippery situation. (Or well, we guess, it’s dry.) We’ll have to see what happens when Stranger Things finale arrives on our screens.
