It’s perfect for Midsomer Murder fans

Now, don’t get it wrong we love a big scale gripping police drama set in a big city, with gangs, explosives and intense car chases across the capital, but sometimes, you just want a calmer way of life and a crime drama that’s set in the countryside, in a close knit community where there’s zero chance of a car chase but the cases are just as mysterious.
If that sounds more your speed, then you need to watch the series Murder in a Small Town which just got added to Netflix. And yes the show is exactly what it sounds like.
The two season drama was only added to Netflix a few days ago and is already steadily making its way up the Top 10, currently in position five here in the UK. So aside from what the name suggests, what is Murder in a Small Town about? Here’s what to know.
What is Murder in a Small Town about?
Murder in a Small Town is a Canadian crime drama which debuted in 2024 in Canada and the US. It’s based on a series of novels The Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries by L.R. Wright, first published in the mid 1980s.
It’s about Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a detective who used to work in the chaos of a big city, but has now moved to the small-knit coastal community of Gibsons in order to soothe his mind. But as Karl is soon to discover, small towns have their secrets too and he starts to investigate a number of murders within the community.
There’s also a heavy romantic plot to it too, as upon moving to Gibsons, Karl strikes up a relationship with local librarian Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) after meeting on a dating app.
Since debuting in 2024, the show has gone onto have a second season and there’s now 18 episodes in total to enjoy.
The show is highly praised by viewers and critics alike with Variety saying of the series: “Charmingly predictable with a sliver of edge, the show is an all-inclusive crowd-pleaser,” and Decider said: “Both a murder mystery series and a romance series. Can the two mesh? So far, it has, mainly thanks to the chemistry between Sutherland and Kreuk.”
