With Season 3 expected to escalate the drama, viewers are eager to see how these lingering mysteries will shape the future of Westeros. House of the Dragon Season 3 will feature many storylines and will likely bring resolution to the unanswered questions. Some of those questions could determine the fate of individual characters, while others may change the course of the war itself. That said, here are ten burning questions that Season 3 must answer.

1What Happened to Otto Hightower?

Last time we saw Otto Hightower, he was locked up in prison, and this happened all too swiftly after he was dismissed from his position as Hand of the King. Obviously, a lot has happened in between, but we don’t know why he is imprisoned and on whose orders.

What was once the mastermind behind Team Green’s political strategy is now a helpless man whose fate is no longer certain. No one knows, either, whether he is detained in King’s Landing or somewhere else. This is important to note, as George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood reveals that once Rhaenyra takes the capital, she would have Otto punished.

2Where Is Daeron Targaryen?

Daeron Targaryen has been repeatedly mentioned in House of the Dragon, but the character himself has yet to appear on screen, which makes his absence one of the most noticeable loose threads. With the appearance of his dragon Tessarion in the Season 3 trailer, we’re now expecting him to make his debut.

Apart from Daeron’s role in aiding the Greens in their fight against the Blacks, the young prince is also a potential claimant to the Iron Throne. This is why Season 3 needs to bring him in as soon as possible and let fans know what he has been up to all this time, and whether he will ultimately take an active role in the war for the crown.

3Will King’s Landing Become Rhaenyra’s Greatest Challenge?

Rhaenyra has been planning to reclaim her birthright for two seasons, and when she finally does during the Fall of King’s Landing, it wouldn’t be as triumphant as she hoped for. Capturing a city is one thing; governing it is another. If she secures control of King’s Landing, she’ll face political unrest, economic problems, and growing opposition from those who question her rule.

The official trailer already showed she’s not quite welcomed in the city. The presence of several dragons is also scaring the commonfolk. Later on, when she has to hand out punishments for the traitors, it will undoubtedly stir turmoil within King’s Landing, which can further weaken her hold over the capital. Season 3 will have to show us how Rhaenyra adapts to the brutal realities of ruling a city that may never truly accept her as queen.

4Could Alicent Still Change the Course of the War?

Alicent spent much of Season 2 questioning the consequences of the conflict she helped ignite, and now that all hell broke loose, she is recoiling and seeking clemency. As tensions escalate, her moral doubts make her a real wild card. House of the Dragon Season 2 already showed cracks in her conviction, suggesting she may no longer fully support the path she once helped set in motion.

The new season must answer whether she is still a player shaping the war or someone about to step away from it entirely. While it looks like she’s given up already, the trailer hints that Rhaenyra isn’t letting her old friend get away with it.

5Is Corlys Velaryon’s Loyalty Beginning to Waver?

Corlys Velaryon is one of the most trusted allies of the Blacks, and a powerful one, too. However, he has suffered devastating personal losses throughout the war. While his loyalty to Rhaenyra appears strong, all these continued setbacks will most likely leave him questioning if he still believes in her cause.

Season 3 is expected to feature more shocking betrayals, and this is why it needs to explore whether the Sea Snake’s loyalty remains unshakable, or if it is starting to drift away. A glimpse of his scene in the trailer already teases that he may begin to doubt whether Rhaenyra is truly capable of ruling after all.

6What Are the Dragonseeds Truly Fighting For?

The dragonseeds were brought in as new dragon riders to strengthen Rhaenyra’s side. While they will prove to be useful in battle, some of them come from unknown backgrounds. It’s not fully known whether they are really fighting for Rhaenyra, for power, or for something more personal.

House of the Dragon has not fully explored this part of the dragonseeds in the previous installment. Since we’re expecting a major betrayal in Season 3, it might as well answer the question of what truly drives their loyalty and whether they can be trusted at all.

7How Dangerous Is Aemond Becoming?

Aemond has always been dangerous, a walking weapon who can detonate with the right amount of provocation, but Season 3 seems like his most volatile and destructive chapter yet. Now that he’s acting as Prince Regent and war has finally come, he’s set to make the most reckless decisions, especially with a dragon like Vhagar at his disposal.

His growing ambition also suggests he is no longer following orders but actively engaging in the war on his own terms. His actions could either secure victory for the Greens or push the realm into even greater chaos, which is why Season 3 needs to show just how dangerous Aemond is becoming and whether anyone can still control him.

8What Is the Future of House Stark’s Involvement?

After House of the Dragon Season 2’s alliance formation between the Blacks and the North, fans will finally witness the Winter Wolves in action. But after this war, what happens next? Will the Targaryens and Starks carry on their mutual agreement?

We know that, while the North tends to move carefully, its alliances are rarely without long-term consequences. It’s good to remember that the Starks will have more active roles in the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons, and this is why Season 3 needs to show how the North slowly positions itself for a much larger role in the conflict.

9Can Team Green Survive Internal Conflicts?

Team Green may be united in name, but their alliances have always been fragile. Many of their biggest problems come from within, with Aemond, Alicent, Criston, and Aegon having competing priorities. We’ve already seen this in the previous season, and we’re left with a cliffhanger ending that suggests these internal tensions will worsen if not resolved.

If anything, House of the Dragon Season 2 made it clear that the Greens are often their own worst enemy, with personal ambition repeatedly clashing against the need for unity. Season 3 will need to show whether they can still work together as a team or if these divisions will lead to their downfall.

10Will the Dance of the Dragons Destroy House Targaryen?

The main question of the whole House of the Dragon series remains unanswered: even if one side wins, what will be left of House Targaryen? The dragons are dying, the realm is collapsing, and every victory seems to come with a devastating price.

At this point, we know that the once-powerful house will eventually lose its grip on Westeros. That’s why Season 3 needs to confront the big question head-on: is this the beginning of the end for House Targaryen?
