According to Tenasia, the drama Climax tells the story of prosecutor Bang Tae Seop, played by Joo Ji Hoon, as he strives to reach the pinnacle of power in South Korea. The actor is paired with Ha Ji Won, who plays the faded actress Chu Sang Ah. Notably, the drama is based on true stories, including the case of the late actress Lee Eun Joo.
The shocking case in Climax is based on real life: Actress commits suicide due to forced sex scenes, many unanswered questions remain
In the drama, the world of showbiz is depicted as not as glamorous as it appears on the surface. Young actors, especially newcomers, are forced to face harsh “unwritten rules”: either willingly compromise for opportunities, or be coerced if they fall under the scrutiny of those in power. The character Chu Sang Ah, played by Ha Ji Won, is no exception. To climb to A-list stardom, she once accepted a “secret deal.” Even a young male actor from the same company was approached by the mayor in a similar way – exchanging one night for a leading role.

Even more frightening is the story of Han Ji Soo (played by Han Dong Hee). As a young actress, she was forced to film sex scenes despite resisting. But once it happened, it happened again; she tried to escape but was caught again. Even with Sang Ah by her side, she still suffered physical and mental trauma and despair that reached its limit. Ultimately, Ji Soo chose to end her life to escape. This scene not only caused outrage but also left a heavy feeling, because it was so similar to what happened in real life.

The plot of the film is based on the death of the late actress Lee Eun Joo – one of the most haunting tragedies in Korean showbiz. In 2005, the actress was found dead at her home at the age of 25. In her suicide note, Lee Eun Joo wrote: “I wanted to do many things but I’m too tired. I’m living but not like a truly living person. I don’t want to disappoint anyone, even though I also want to make money. I want to go back to the days of a year ago.”
Previously, she had participated in the film The Scarlet Letter, which featured many controversial intimate scenes. According to her relatives, the pressure from having to perform sensitive scenes, along with the intense public criticism, caused her to suffer a severe mental breakdown.

Notably, years later, shocking information emerged with reports that Lee Eun Joo was forced to participate in “entertainment” with powerful figures in the industry. Her brother also spoke out, confirming that his sister was a victim of the harshness of showbiz, even showing signs of abuse. Although the film’s production team denied any involvement, the true cause of the actress’s death remains a big question mark to this day. Therefore, when Climax depicts the story of an actress forced to film sex scenes to the point of seeking escape, the haunting feeling comes not only from the script but also from the terrifying similarities to real life.

From another perspective, this detail also shows the ambition of the production team in not shying away from sensitive issues. The director himself shared that the script was inspired by his own experiences over more than 20 years in the profession, so the plot points in the film are very “realistic,” even brutal. No longer a glamorous drama, Climax chooses to expose the dark sides that many people know but few dare to speak about.
