Spoiler Alert !!! This article contains spoiler for The Night Manager Episode 3!

The Night Manager returned in 2026 with a gripping second season nearly a decade after the original. Bringing back Tom Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine for yet another high-stakes spy thriller rooted in espionage, arms dealing, and undercover infiltration.

The second season premiered on Prime Video on January 11, 2026, with three episodes. In the second season, Pine has left his job as a hotel manager and is living under the alias Alex Goodwin. He works for MI6 in London as a low-level intelligence officer. His quiet life is disrupted when he spots a former mercenary, associated with Hugh Laurie‘s Richard Roper, called Teddy Dos Santos.

Teddy is a Colombian businessman and arms magnate, and Pine infiltrates his operation in an effort to stop massive illegal weapons shipments that could destabilize a nation. Teddy is also the illegitimate son of Roper, as was revealed in Episode 2. Thus, he goes undercover, this time using the identity of Matthew Ellis in order to expose the conspiracy and get closer to Teddy.

But things take a wild turn when he discovers a shocking truth regarding his old enemy, Roper, changing the course of the entire operation and his past. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the shocking developments and what they imply for the rest of the season.

Why is Matthew Making a $20 Million Donation to Teddy’s Charity?

In Episodes 2–3 of The Night Manager Season 2, Pine assumes the alias Matthew as part of his deep cover to infiltrate Teddy Dos Santos’s arms organization. As “Matthew,” Pine must gain Teddy’s trust while ensuring his own survival, and that requires money.

With the help of Roxanne, he manages to secure a deal with Teddy after she informs him that he needs over $20 million to survive. While playing along to make it look like he has fallen for Roxy’s bait, he tells her to convey to Teddy that he is ready to sign a contract in Cartagena, as he has other meetings to take care of. He also tells her that first, he needs her to get a list of all the weaponry that is to be shipped.

Wanting immunity in exchange, she takes him over to Teddy’s place, where they talk, and Jonathan gets ready to make a hefty investment deal. As he gets ready to sign the papers, he sees that the investment is being made under the guise of a charitable organisation named Aurora, which is owned by Teddy to take care of the victims of Colombia’s years of violence.

He is also informed that he will be the owner of a new company and will also get some handsome dividends in about three months’ time. While he signs the papers, he needs the help of Sally and Basil to present the $20 million. He makes a call to his bank in Belize, which is really just Sally, to approve the transaction.

But he is told that the money will be transferred only in 12 hours, as Belize has some new laws in place that require extra authorization.

Why Does Teddy Try to Kill Matthew in Episode 3?

Now that the money is delayed, Matthew has to spend the night with them to make sure the transaction is not fake. As he waits, Pine breaks into the lawyer’s office to find more evidence but is left empty-handed. Just then, Teddy comes inside the office and is talking to a man called Hanson. After the call, Teddy appears agitated and s*lf-h*rms.

Pine then gets back into the hotel room and goes down to have dinner, where he appears to blow things up a bit. He tells Teddy that he is a fraud who is just pretending to get his way and even reveals that he knows about Teddy’s shipment.

Things don’t go well from there, as he is taken at gunpoint to a fishing trawler. Teddy is ready to kill him because he still doesn’t fully trust Pine and thinks he might be a fake. Back in England, Mayra (the head of MI6) is causing big problems. She finds out about the secret $300 million stash that came from the late Richard Roper.

Wanting to know who’s controlling it now, and she’s blocking the $20 million transfer that Pine desperately needs to prove he’s a real rich client and save his life. While Roxy manages to get the full list of illegal weapons, on the boat, things are looking hopeless, with Matthew just a step away from being thrown off into the sea.

The time passes, and the money is still not deposited, and to buy time, Pine tries one last trick: he “confesses” that he was once in the military, says he knows Teddy’s reputation, and claims that is why he chose Teddy to launder his dirty money.

At the very last second, Basil pulls off a tense trick back in England, he finally convinces Mayra to approve the fake $20 million transfer (using it as bait to catch Teddy later). The money shows up just in time, Teddy believes Pine is real, and they stop the execution. Pine is saved, but only for now.

After nearly killing Pine, Teddy acts as if he wasn’t really going to kill him and reveals that he was just born in this life to fight for money. He goes on to reveal that he is creating an army for hire through Aurora, but declines to reveal who the army is for. He takes him back to the hotel and tells him to stay there as he has a meeting to attend.

While at the hotel, Pine meets Sally, who tells him that Gilberto Hanson died 17 years ago, but his death has been kept a secret. This means anyone could be using the fake identity now, and whoever is using it is probably behind Teddy’s secret army plan.

After meeting Roxy secretly, who hands him the list, they say their tense goodbyes. Then Pine decides to follow Teddy’s chopper in the mountains, where he is probably meeting Hanson.

Pine manages to find their location and watches from the bushes. There, Teddy and his lawyer are talking to the general about starting a war with Hanson present. When the General asks Hanson if he trusts Teddy, he speaks up, and Pine hears a voice he never expected to hear again.

The unmistakable English voice and later sight of Richard Roper make it clear that he is no ghost or rumor: it is really him. At the start of The Night Manager Season 2, the audience is shown what appears to be Roper’s corpse being identified by MI6 operative Angela Burr in Syria, with Pine present for the confirmation. But now, all that appears to be a farce.

Richard Roper is alive and well and back in motion to cause more geopolitical damage, this time with his illegitimate son, Teddy. The third episode ended with this cliffhanger, and we can expect that the ongoing Season 2 of The Night Manager is poised to enter a far darker and more personal chapter for Jonathan Pine.
