Kiki Shepard has died at the age of 74.

The co-host of the legendary long-running music show, Showtime at the Apollo, died after suffering a ‘massive’ and ‘completely unexpected’ heart attack in Los Angeles on Monday.

Shepard’s representative, LaShirl Smith, confirmed the news in a statement to the Daily Mail.

The star – born Chiquita Renee Shepard – became a beloved fixture in millions of American households during her 15-year tenure on the legendary Showtime at the Apollo.

Sharing the stage with Steve Harvey from 1987 to 2002, she helped launch the careers of countless aspiring artists at the iconic Harlem theater.

Her long list of co-hosts on also featured stars such as Sinbad and Mo’Nique, as well as Mark Curry, Rudy Rush and Rick Aviles.

The program featured live performances from both professional and emerging musical acts.

During her time on the show, Shepard was known as the ‘Apollo Queen of Fashion.’

Beyond the Apollo stage, Shepard continued to work in television, appearing on shows like NYPD Blue, Grey’s Anatomy, and Everybody Hates Chris, as well as 1990s staples like A Different World and Baywatch.

Meanwhile, her film credits include Dolls of Voodoo, A Rage in Harlem, Miss Evers’ Boys, and Blackjack Christmas.

Shepard’s talents also extended to the Broadway stage.

Her theatrical credits included roles in Bubbling Brown Sugar, Reggae, and Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, as well as Porgy and Bess.

Long before becoming a household name at the Apollo, Shepard’s journey in the spotlight began as a professional dancer in the early 1970s.

She performed for audiences around the world, including with the D.C. Repertory Dance Company.

Born in Tyler, Texas, in 1951, Shepard was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School and Howard University.

Following her death, fans took to social media to mourn the star, with one writing on X, ‘What a legend. May her soul rest in peace.’

‘Rest in peace, Kiki Shepard. A true icon of Showtime at the Apollo—she will be deeply missed,’ another added.

‘A piece of Black entertainment history. Showtime at the Apollo wouldn’t have been the same without her. Rest easy.’
