Longtime Harry Potter fans have criticized HBO’s choice of Paapa Essiedu for the role of Snape, calling it a mistake and claiming it has ruined the series from the very beginning. They argued that Paapa Essiedu’s portrayal of Snape in the Harry Potter TV series looked more like a hip-hop singer than a wizard from the magical world, and they shared images of the late Alan Rickman, who had earned the admiration of generations for his portrayal of Severus Snape in the iconic film adaptations.
Aside from the criticism, some viewers believe that HBO is aiming for a breakthrough by reinventing the image of Severus Snape and are now waiting to see Paapa Essiedu’s performance.
