Finn Wolfhard Recalls a Ghost Encounter He Had While Filming “It”: ‘It Was Pretty Scary’ (Exclusive)
The actor starred as Richie Tozier in the 2017 horror film, based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King
A scary clown wasn’t the only fright that Finn Wolfhard and his costars had to face while filming It.
In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE tied to his partnership with Ring for its Great Ghost Search, the actor, 21, recalls potentially seeing a spirit on the set of the 2017 horror film.
“I’ve been in a lot of supernatural movies and TV shows, but ironically, I’ve never really seen a full-on ghost,” Wolfhard says, “but there was a time when I was a kid shooting It in this abandoned mansion in Toronto, and me and a bunch of the other cast were exploring the floors.”
“We went up to the top floor and there was one room where we saw a guy in black just kind of doing electrician work, and we were just like, ‘Okay, that’s just a crew member,’ ” he continues. “But then later, we found out that no one knew who that was, and no one ever saw him again.”
“It could have been someone just messing around, but, yeah, it was pretty scary,” adds the star — who has appeared in other horror-based projects, including Stranger Things, The Turning and The Addams Family, plus Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
In It, Wolfhard stars as Richie Tozier, a member of a group of friends known as The Losers Club who are terrorized by a demonic being that appears in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård).
Alongside the actor, others who appear in the film include Sophia Lillis, Jaden Lieberher, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Jeremy Ray Taylor.
The first of a two-part adaptation of the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King, 2017’s It was followed by It: Chapter Two, which was released in 2019.
In it, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Andy Bean take over as adult versions of The Losers Club, who come back to their hometown of Derry to fight Pennywise after a years-long slumber.
Both film versions of It, as well as a two-part 1990s miniseries take on the story, are available to stream on Max.
