ScreenRant: Well, at the very least, there’s a pretty solid support system within The Pitt’s ED that will hopefully help regain that confidence and that drive for her. One dynamic that I wanted to get your take on, as well, is everybody’s been shipping Langdon and Mel since season 1. That’s such an interesting dynamic in that it could be seen as something romantic, but it could also just be seen as a very, again, another kind of sibling, platonic, caring relationship. How do you view their dynamic?

Taylor Dearden: Patrick and I actually completely agree. We talked about this second season with, once we heard that everyone was shipping [us], it was kind of like — one of my best friends is a straight guy, and some of his friends are straight women, and it’s just like, “Why does that have to be a thing? Why can’t we just be two people who are friends?” And this idea that because we’re opposite gender, and have the potential, I guess, in people’s minds, to be attracted to each other, that that has to happen, which truthfully, I think it’s way more powerful and more true to my life also to have just platonic friendships. Also, platonic friendships, it’s very hard to break that up. It would take a huge falling out for that to end. I also like the idea of Mel having someone way more stable, and not having the will-they-won’t-they, or anything like that, but the idea that, “Yeah, he’ll be there.” He’ll be there for her, and she’ll be there for him. And the other romantic stuff, I don’t know, we didn’t ever think of it that way. And also, it’s weird to me because he is married with two children, and it just feels like, “Well, that’s something I don’t think Langdon or Mel would ever do.” Also, really like the friendship thing. Both Patrick and I, we understand, but we’re not bummed, but a little bit bummed, because it’s like, “Oh, we thought we were portraying a unique thing to see on TV, because you always see shipping, but you don’t see platonic friends,” and we both kind of wanted that. I get it, though. It’s kind of a trope. It would be a trope, and I don’t think The Pitt really does trope stuff like that.

Dearden continued by explaining how the pair offer a support system for one another, especially in The Pitt season 2, with Becca coming in as a patient. Although the pair haven’t known each other for relatively long, considering the few shifts they’ve shared, the impact they’ve had on one another makes their friendship close and important for both of them:

ScreenRant: No, it doesn’t. And I’m someone who is in also complete agreement with you and Patrick. I have not been shipping you two. I’m like, “Look, you have too much going on in your life with Becca. He’s got too much going on in his life with his struggles, and then with his family that I’m like, ‘No, that’s not going to work out. Let’s just let them be supportive of each other.’”

Taylor Dearden: The thing they both need, more than anything, is a solid friend that stays and is loyal. Langdon is finding himself without friends in the second season, and realizing that even the people who are with him are hesitant, except for Mel. And I think, especially with Becca leaving, even though it’s been 10 months later, people still don’t seem to be friends with Mel yet, or they don’t really get her. And in comes this guy that, even though they only knew each other for a day, made a serious effort to get to know her. I think that means everything to Mel. So, to have these two people who need each other more desperately than romantically.

Why Mel & Langdon Work Better As Friends In The Pitt

Ever since The Pitt season 1 ended, it’s been clear that Mel and Langdon have a close relationship with one another. Of all the doctors in the ER, he was the one who got to know Mel the most. Their friendship started strong and only continued to grow, with Langdon becoming a core part of Mel’s learning experience.

Langdon also learned from her, too, when she taught him how to properly approach a patient with autism. This came up again when Becca requested him as her doctor, as he used the lessons he learned from Mel in order to better his own practice. Because of the pair’s closeness and how well they work together, shipping seems inevitable.

But, as the show has stated numerous times, Langdon is married with at least two young children. His wife almost divorced him after he was caught stealing drugs from the ER, but eventually stayed. While not perfect, he has a home life that’s relatively stable, something he’s unlikely to ruin by beginning a romantic relationship with Mel.

Will The Pitt Ever Explore Mel’s Love Life?

For now, it’s unclear if The Pitt‘s medical realism will also include Mel finding love while inside the ER. As of writing, there doesn’t seem to be any reason for the show to approach her storyline with any level of romance. Right now, she’s worried about caring for her sister while awaiting the results of her nerve-wracking deposition.
