Maya Hawke got some candid advice from mom Uma Thurman about Quentin Tarantino.

Appearing with her Inside Out 2 costar Amy Poehler on the Wednesday, Nov. 4 episode of her podcast Good Hang, Hawke, 27, recalled working with the legendary director on 2019 hit Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

When Poehler, 54, asked if Hawke received words of wisdom from Thurman, Tarantino’s collaborator on Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, Hawke recalled that it was short and sweet: “‘Keep your shoes on,’” she quipped, referring to the filmmaker’s alleged obsession with bare feet.

“Keep your shoes on,” repeated Poehler, before the two burst into laughter. The host added, “Keep ’em on, baby. Perfect advice. Perfect.”

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood indeed featured shots of the bare feet of stars Margot RobbieMargaret Qualley and Dakota Fanning. Tarantino, 62, was called out for his track record in the feet department when Brad Pitt accepted a 2020 Screen Actors Guild Award. Thanking his fellow Once Upon a Time filmmakers, he joked that the director “has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA.”

Hawke has both Thurman, 55, and Ethan Hawke to turn to for parental and career advice. Her favorite childhood memories, she told Poehler, involved visiting her parents on sets. “It was like this safe, little world where I could be alone. No one needed to be watching me. I could walk over to Crafty and take cookies and M&M’s and gummy bears and get them and I could go watch the stunt people practice.”

It felt “like Disneyland,” added the Stranger Things star. “It’s really where I fell in love with acting, backstage at the theater and on set.”

She and Poehler also bonded about working together on 2024 animated hit Inside Out 2. Thanks to Hawke’s character, Anxiety, “I’ve had so many people feel so seen by it,” she said. “Little kids feel so seen by it. And, like, it helped them understand their brain better.”

Among Hawke’s upcoming screen projects are Wishful ThinkingThe Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, premiering Nov. 26 on Netflix.
