While Bridgerton Season 4 primarily centers on Benedict Bridgerton’s romance with Sophie Baek, adapted from Julia Quinn’s An Offer From a Gentleman, the season also deepens the emotional arc of Eloise Bridgerton.

One of the most compelling characters in the story, she has long stood out as the independent, inquisitive, and intellectually curious sibling who dares to question societal norms and resists societal pressures to marry and settle down. While in the first three seasons she usually had someone she could relate to, like Penelope or Benedict, this season she is truly alone.

Yet, a personal evolution is incoming, as we saw in Part 1 of Season 4. With her best friend happily married and settled, and her closest sibling ready to settle down, we can see Eloise grapple with her own sense of purpose and what it means to choose a life that deviates from the traditional marriage plot.

While her wit and rebellious spirit remain intact, the season pushes her further into the spotlight, not through a central love story but by starting her personal evolution. Even though she might not end up being the lead for Season 5, Season 4 seems to lay the emotional groundwork for her future arc. In doing so, it also transforms her into one of the key characters.

Bridgerton Season 4 Sets the Stage For Eloise’s Love Story

In Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1, Eloise grows increasingly alone, especially as the elder Bridgertons find happiness in partnerships and families. Even the young Hyacinth is eagerly looking forward to her debut, which puts a lot of things into perspective for Eloise.

When RadioTimes asked actress Claudia Jessie how instrumental Season 4 will be for her character, in terms of setting up her own story, the actress replied:

In terms of setting her up, I think Eloise is desperately trying to find her way of doing it, right? That’s what I’ve always been excited to be able to one day do, is to show love or romance or whatever her journey is in the most Eloise way possible. I think she’s just trying to find out her way of doing it.

The actress continued:

That’s what I think the set-up is until ultimately we see what her way of doing it is, her version of it. I’m buzzing to one day do it. I love this show with my whole heart, I love my colleagues, I love Eloise so I’ll be buzzing to do it.

In Part 1, we also saw her trying to put herself on the shelf before her mother, the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, thwarts her. This certainly causes her more trouble, since she is doing everything she can to not be noticed by the ton. Yet, it also sets her up as the lead of either of the two upcoming seasons.

Eloise is unlike any of her siblings, or any of the young ladies of the ton. Not defined or even initiated by marriage or societal expectations, she is one of the most relatable characters for modern audiences.

While discussing the same in an interview with Elle, Claudia Jessie remarked:

I think she is the closest you’re going to get to the audience in the show. I think a lot of what is across Bridgerton is relevant today. I think that’s got a lot to do with the writers. That’s what’s special about Bridgerton, isn’t it? It’s this period piece, but it feels so contemporary.

She also noted that, despite the change in era, the show’s human nature remains the same. At the same time, the show also romanticises things that are so rare today, yet remain integral to human nature. Jessie hopes the show will continue to discuss such topics and drive conversations.
