What if Stranger Things and Stephen King’s IT exist in the same universe? Before you roll your eyes, hear us out. There’s this one scene from Season 2 that’s got fans convinced Bob Newby (Sean Astin) might’ve actually encountered Pennywise as a kid.

The whole thing centers around Bob and a story he shares with Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) while driving him to school. Bob’s trying to help Will deal with what everyone thinks is PTSD from being “lost in the woods” (if only they knew). He tells Will about this terrifying clown from his childhood named Mr. Baldo, who scared him at the Roane County Fair.

According to Bob, this clown tapped him on the shoulder and asked in the creepiest way possible,

Hey, kiddo, would you like a balloon?

Sound familiar? That’s basically Pennywise’s calling card. Bob says the nightmares haunted him until he finally stood up to the clown in his dreams and told it to leave him alone.

That’s already bizarre, but on top of that, in Stephen King’s original IT novel, Pennywise frequently introduces himself as Robert “Bob” Gray. The entity even uses “Mr. Bob Gray” when interacting with humans. So we’ve got a character named Bob, who encountered a terrifying clown offering balloons, with connections to Maine. The pieces fit together a little too perfectly.

Stranger Things & IT: The Maine Connection Explained

It gets even more interesting when later in Season 2, Bob suggests to Joyce (Winona Ryder) that they should move to Maine to buy his parents’ house there. Now, Stephen King fans know that Maine is the epicenter of King’s horror universe, and IT is set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine.

The timeline actually works out pretty well too. Bob was born in Hawkins, Indiana around 1941-1942, but his parents moved to Maine at some point. If Bob spent any childhood time visiting or staying with them in Maine during the late 1950s, that’s exactly when Pennywise was active in Derry. So, could Bob have been one of the kids who got away?

Stephen King Homage: What Stranger Things Creators Say

Matt Duffer admitted in an interview with Vulture that he’s had a lifelong fear of clowns, especially after watching Tim Curry’s Pennywise in the 1990 IT miniseries.

I think [Bob’s clown story] was really me describing something that just freaked me out. I didn’t have that experience myself. I just had nightmares like that.

For the Maine connection, the Duffer Brothers thought it would be “cute” to have Bob suggest moving to Maine, “right next to Stephen King.”

The Duffers also confirmed that Stephen King exists as an author in the Stranger Things universe. So technically, IT the novel couldn’t have influenced Bob since the book wasn’t published until 1985, and Season 2 takes place in 1984.

The creators say it’s just a homage to their horror inspirations, but fan theories don’t always need official confirmation to be fun, right? Whether Bob Newby actually escaped Pennywise or the Duffer Brothers just created one heck of a spooky Easter egg, the connection adds another layer to Bob’s tragic story. He survived childhood terrors (real or imagined) in Maine only to sacrifice himself fighting Demodogs in Hawkins. Bob Newby really was a superhero, either way.
