“There’s no red wedding”: Duffer Brothers Confirm Stranger Things Ending Won’t Be as Brutal as Tragic Game of Thrones Moments

From shocking twists to emotional storylines and big mysteries, here’s what to expect in Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2.

Stranger Things, Game Of Thrones

The Duffer Brothers have made something very clear: Stranger Things is not gearing up for a Game of Thrones–style bloodbath. After Volume 1 of the final season dropped on November 26, the duo told Variety that fans shouldn’t brace for a massacre. As Matt Duffer put it,

The show is not “Game of Thrones”… There’s no Red Wedding, if that’s what you’re asking. That would be depressing.

Sure, there’s a big twist at the end of the latest episode, and one character walks away with far more than emotional scars, but the Duffers are steering clear of a finale that wipes out half of Hawkins. They insist the heart of the story matters more than shock kills—though yes, the tissues may still be necessary.

Duffer Brothers Tease Season 5’s Most Violent Death

Even though the brothers aren’t planning a Westeros-level massacre, they aren’t exactly pulling punches either. Season 5 may be lighter on gore compared to the chaos of Season 4, but Matt Duffer revealed to The Times that it still “has the most violent death of any season.” That’s quite a statement considering Season 4 threw demogorgon attacks, bone-snapping curses, and enough blood to keep makeup crews up at night.

The creators admitted they do try to hold back when possible, but sometimes the story demands things get messy. As Ross Duffer explained, their goal has always been to scale the show with the kids and the audience who grew up with them. They always wanted to do so, even if that means a few parents might raise eyebrows at the escalating intensity.

But with the show finally nearing its end after nearly a decade, the Duffers were adamant that every character deserved a finish that felt “right.” They will make it happen even if it wasn’t necessarily what fans predicted or begged for.

That emotional weight is why this season is being framed as their biggest and most sentimental chapter yet. The stakes are colossal. The characters are at their most vulnerable. And even when the monsters aren’t tearing limbs apart, the story might still break a few hearts.

What to Look Forward to in Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2

Volume 1 left viewers hanging by several threads, and none of them feel particularly safe. Holly’s sudden kidnapping by Vecna, a strange, fleshy barrier swallowing up both the Upside Down and Hawkins Lab, and Will’s powers finally waking up have all twisted the tension to new heights.

Henry’s eerie habit of manipulating children through music creeps back into the story. Max is still caught in the same dimension as Holly. She hides in caves that look suspiciously like Nevada’s strange, empty landscapes. Meanwhile, the contrast between Eleven’s confidence in her abilities and Will’s raw, unpredictable connection to the Hive Mind sparks even more questions.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Stranger Things without the emotional knot. There are unspoken feelings and half-finished conversations waiting to happen. Will’s complicated crush on Mike is still there. Jonathan and Nancy’s situation feels more like an overdue talk. Nancy and Steve still have that spark. All of that is going on beneath a bigger mystery. We will soon find out if Mind Flayer is still the puppet master. Or has Henry finally claimed the throne of Hawkins’ darkness?

We can also expect revelations about Dr. Kay’s strange interest in Eleven, a weird satellite-powered “kryptonite,” and even Kali making a comeback. Everything is lining up for a massive final push toward New Year’s Eve.

Volume 2 promises answers, mayhem, and emotional chaos. And along with them, there is maybe a bit of hope. Whether Vecna falls, Will speaks his truth, or the Upside Down finally shows its full face, one thing’s certain: fans are about to be pulled straight back into Hawkins for one last nerve-wracking ride.
