HBO has unveiled the first images from the much-anticipated new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series, along with the official release date.
A new Harry. A new Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, and Snape. And an entirely new Hogwarts are all showcased in the teaser trailer for the Harry Potter series on HBO.
The first trailer offers a glimpse into the highly awaited project, which will adapt the seven books by J.K. Rowling into a multi-season series.
Several iconic moments from the 2001 book and film adaptation are featured in the trailer, such as Harry Potter’s first meeting with Hagrid, the moment he dons the Sorting Hat, and his first Quidditch match as the Seeker for Gryffindor House.
Harry Potter series announces an earlier-than-expected premiere date
The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released by Warner Bros. and directed by Chris Columbus in 2001). The trailer introduces the main characters of the season and recreates several iconic moments.
A big surprise: the trailer reveals that the release date is Christmas 2026, earlier than the previously announced 2027.
Notably, the official title of the first season is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone rather than just Harry Potter, as many had assumed. It’s likely that each season will be named after the book it adapts, with the first using the original British title rather than the American version.
The series introduces Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) and his two friends Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) during their first year at Hogwarts.
The cast includes John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Potions Master Severus Snape.
JB Perrette, Warner Bros. Global Streaming and Games CEO, called this the “largest streaming event in HBO Max history, possibly even the entire industry.” THR was invited to an exclusive screening of the trailer in London, in a room designed to resemble Harry’s cupboard under the stairs.

Controversy over the casting of a Black actor as Snape leads to death threats
A recent point of contention was Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Snape. The decision to cast a Black actor in the role of a character that was originally depicted as white in the books (previously portrayed by Alan Rickman) has sparked mixed reactions.
Most opinions criticized the portrayal as too youthful, lacking the gravitas and cold demeanor that the Potions Master is known for. Some even sarcastically compared the look to that of a rapper rather than a wizard.
The actor revealed that he received death threats but chose to turn the backlash into motivation for his performance.

Paapa Essiedu shared with The Times: “I’ve been told, ‘Quit the role or I’ll kill you.’ If I open Instagram, there are people saying they’ll come to my house and kill me. No one should face this just for doing their job. I’m just playing a wizard in Harry Potter.”
“And it would be dishonest to say that it didn’t affect my feelings. But the theme of Harry Potter is about love conquering hate, and that’s why I’m doing this.”

Meanwhile, John Lithgow shared that he was pressured to leave the project due to J.K. Rowling’s views. The author, who has sold over 600 million copies of her books worldwide, has been controversial for her comments regarding transgender rights. She is involved in the project as an executive producer.
John Lithgow said he was hurt by the criticisms but emphasized that J.K. Rowling’s books stand for goodness, opposing intolerance and prejudice.
Recently, Harry Potter film star Daniel Radcliffe also made headlines when he suggested that Dominic McLaughlin might do a better job than he did in the iconic role.
