Stranger Things season 5 had a surprise twist about Max (Sadie Sink), which has made way for a theory about how she might sacrifice herself in the upcoming episodes. After another long wait of three years, Stranger Things is finally back with its fifth and final season, which Netflix split into three parts, the first one released on November 26, 2025.

Stranger Things season 5 takes place a year after the ending of season 4, and sees Hawkins under quarantine, overseen by the military. Meanwhile, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the rest of the group continue to come up with plans to find and defeat Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), but everything is complicated when he targets Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher).

Kidnapping Holly is just one part of Vecna’s new plan, and while Holly’s body is kept unconscious in the Upside Down, her mind is inside Vecna’s. One of the biggest reveals of Stranger Things season 5 part 1 was that Max is also trapped in Vecna’s mind, but this might lead to a more tragic ending for her.

When Holly Wheeler is lured to a wall of rocks, thinking Henry/Vecna sent her a note asking her to meet him there, she’s surprised to find Max, who actually sent her the note. There, Max explains to Holly what happened to her after Vecna’s attack in season 4, including how she was very close to escaping and returning to her body, but Vecna caught up with her.

Max continued running away from him and made it to the rocks, and she was surprised to see that Vecna couldn’t come close to them. Max then made a refuge on the rocks, where she had been hiding all this time.

Max and Holly then come up with a plan to fool Henry and escape, with Holly using the book A Wrinkle in Time and Camazotz as a reference. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the Hawkins crew, the other kids are taken by the Demogorgons into the Upside Down at the end of Stranger Things season 5 part 1 to fulfill Vecna’s plan.

Now, the second episode of part 2 is titled “Chapter Six: Escape from Camazotz”, and I can’t help but suspect that Max might not be included in said escape. With more children now trapped in the Upside Down and Henry’s mind, escaping will be harder, so Max might end up sacrificing herself so Holly, Derek, and the rest can escape.

Max’s Sacrifice Could Give Her One Final Meeting With Eleven

Eleven tried to find Max’s mind at the end of Stranger Things season 4 and failed, but we now know it was because Max is in Vecna’s mind. If Eleven figures out that Vecna is keeping the consciousness of his victims in his mind and their bodies in the Upside Down, she might finally reunite with Max in Vecna’s mind.

Eleven could even help Max and the kids escape Camazotz, but that would also mean that she could end up witnessing her friend’s definitive end. As tragic as this would be, Eleven could let everyone know that Max died as a hero, and that would further motivate everyone to kill Vecna.

Even If Max Survives, She Won’t Have A Happy Ending

Of course, there’s still a possibility that Max will escape Vecna’s mind, return to her body, and survive this whole nightmare, but that doesn’t guarantee her a happy ending. Vecna’s attack in season 4 left Max’s body severely damaged, with multiple fractures (which have now healed), and it left her blind.

If Max returns to her body, she will go through a very long physical recovery, and it’s unlikely she will be able to see again. There’s also the psychological damage she has gone through since Billy’s death in season 3, which made her a target of Vecna in the first place, in addition to all the trauma she has gone through inside Vecna’s mind.

Max might have a heroic death in Stranger Things or a very tough return to her body, so either way, Max’s story will have a tough and not entirely happy ending.
