BOULDER, Colo. — Dominiq Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene of a devastating single-vehicle crash early Sunday after suffering catastrophic traumatic injuries, according to state authorities, as investigators await final autopsy findings that could take several weeks to complete.
The 23-year-old University of Colorado quarterback lost control of his Tesla in the pre-dawn hours along a curved stretch of Baseline Road, officials said. The vehicle crossed lanes, tore through a guardrail, struck a utility pole and rolled down an embankment before erupting into flames. First responders arriving shortly after 3 a.m. found the car engulfed and the driver unresponsive.
Emergency personnel determined that Ponder’s injuries were incompatible with survival, and he was declared deceased at the scene.
The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has launched a comprehensive forensic examination. While the full autopsy report remains pending, preliminary toxicology screening has indicated potential evidence of a stimulant substance in Ponder’s system, according to sources briefed on the early findings. Authorities cautioned that such initial indicators are not conclusive and require confirmatory laboratory analysis before any formal determination is made.
Investigators have not publicly identified the specific substance in question. Stimulants can include a broad range of compounds — from certain prescription medications to illicit narcotics — and the presence of such a substance does not, in itself, establish impairment or causation.
Crash reconstruction specialists are continuing to evaluate vehicle data, speed estimates, roadway geometry and mechanical integrity as part of the broader inquiry. Law enforcement officials stressed that no definitive conclusions have been reached regarding contributing factors.
Ponder, who transferred to Colorado after beginning his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman University, had been competing for an expanded role within the Buffaloes program. Teammates and university officials have described him as disciplined, focused and respected inside the locker room.
Final autopsy and toxicology results are expected in the coming weeks, at which point authorities say a clearer picture may emerge of the events leading up to the fatal crash that abruptly ended the life of the young quarterback
