Frontier Passenger Recounts Horrifying Seconds After Denver Runway Collision As Father Shielded His Sons From Gruesome Scene During Chaotic Midnight Escape From Smoke-Filled Plane
A Frontier Airlines passenger is revealing chilling new details from inside the Denver runway disaster that left America horrified, describing the exact moment he looked out the aircraft window and saw what appeared to be a human leg spinning inside the plane’s engine after the jet struck a trespasser during takeoff.
John Anthens, who was traveling with his two sons aboard Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, said the terrifying images are something he may never forget.
The incident unfolded late Friday night as the Airbus A321neo accelerated down the runway at Denver International Airport for a scheduled flight to Los Angeles. According to authorities, the aircraft struck 41-year-old Michael Mott, who investigators say had breached airport security and walked onto the active runway moments before takeoff.
Anthens recalled that passengers initially believed the plane had suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure after a loud bang shook the aircraft violently.
“We heard a huge explosion,” he said, describing how screams immediately erupted inside the cabin as smoke began drifting through parts of the aircraft. But what happened seconds later was even worse.
Looking out the window near the wing, Anthens said he suddenly noticed something horrifying inside the engine.
“I saw a person’s leg spinning around in there,” he revealed, explaining that he instantly realized someone had been struck by the aircraft.
The father said his immediate instinct was to protect his children from the gruesome scene unfolding outside.
As panicked passengers rushed toward emergency exits, Anthens reportedly covered his sons’ eyes and pushed them away from the windows while flight attendants shouted evacuation orders through the chaos.
Videos recorded inside the aircraft captured terrified travelers screaming, climbing over seats, and sliding onto the dark tarmac as emergency lights surrounded the plane. Several passengers later described believing they were about to die after smoke rapidly filled the cabin following the collision.
Cockpit audio later released publicly revealed the pilots urgently telling air traffic control, “We just hit somebody,” moments after aborting takeoff.
According to investigators, the impact partially pulled the victim into one of the jet’s engines, triggering flames and scattering human remains across sections of the runway. First responders arriving at the scene reportedly described seeing “limbs on the runway” near the damaged aircraft.
Twelve passengers suffered injuries during the emergency evacuation, while several others were treated for shock after witnessing the horrifying aftermath.
Authorities have since ruled Michael Mott’s death a suicide, saying the 41-year-old climbed over an eight-foot perimeter fence topped with barbed wire before walking directly into the path of the accelerating aircraft.
As investigators continue examining how the security breach happened, Anthens says the emotional trauma of what he and his children witnessed may never fully disappear.
What began as a routine family flight to Los Angeles ended with one father desperately trying to shield his sons from an image so disturbing that many passengers onboard now say they cannot stop replaying the moment in their minds.
