For thirty-two days, Minh had never called home.

His mother kept staring at her phone every evening, wondering if her youngest son was eating well, sleeping enough, or silently struggling through military training.

“Mom… I don’t think I can do this anymore…”

His words came between sobs. His hands were blistered. Every muscle ached. The endless drills, sleepless nights, and strict discipline had pushed him further than he’d ever imagined. He admitted he wanted to quit, to come home, to sleep in his own bed just one more night.

His mother fought back tears.

She wanted nothing more than to tell him to return home immediately.

But instead, she swallowed the pain and quietly said,

“Son… if you give up today, you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering what would have happened if you stayed. Mom misses you every second, but I want to see the man you’ll become.”

Silence.

Then the call ended.

For weeks afterward, there were no more phone calls.

Only waiting.

Until graduation day arrived.

As the military band played and rows of young soldiers marched across the parade ground, Minh appeared in full uniform.

His posture was straight.

His eyes were confident.

When the ceremony ended, he walked toward his mother, wrapped his arms around her, and whispered through tears,
