To truly understand the fear in Henry’s eyes, I must recount the crucial clues from the prequel play, The First Shadow. Let me confirm once again that all these details are canon to the show and have been verified by the writers and the Duffer Brothers.
It all begins when the U.S. Military attempts to make a battleship invisible in the “Rainbow Project” in 1943 (based on the real-life Philadelphia Experiment and the Montauk Project). This experiment was a “success beyond expectations,” throwing the ship straight into Dimension X (the precursor to The Upside Down). There, a Demogorgon massacred the entire crew.
The captain (who is also Dr. Brenner’s father) was the sole survivor, but he returned with his blood type altered by the Mind Flayer and carrying “particles” from that dimension (the same particles that Will later absorbed in Season 2). These particles were subsequently extracted and stored in a secret box for continued experimentation.
In 1958, a Russian spy stole this box and, for unknown reasons, died in a cave in Nevada. Fate intervened when a young Henry Creel found and opened it right at the cave entrance, making him the next host.
