NEED TO KNOW

  • Callan West Perez was killed by his father Giovanni Perez, who then turned the gun on himself near the ticket counter at Elko Regional Airport in Nevada
  • Callan, who was in the middle of a custody battle between his father and maternal grandparents, is being remembered as the “sweetest soul”
  • Giovanni was reportedly trying to keep the child from both the maternal grandparents and his own family

A California family is mourning the death of a beloved 11-year-old who was found shot in an airport bathroom last week.

Callan West Perez, who attended school in Merced, Calif. as of last year, was found with gunshot wounds in the bathroom of the Elko Regional Airport in Nevada on April 13, the Elko Police Department said in a statement. He died after being taken to the hospital.

Authorities determined Callan’s father Giovanni Perez shot him in the bathroom of the airport before turning the gun on himself near a ticket counter, police said in their statement.

The investigation revealed that the father and son were traveling together in a rental car when the vehicle broke down near Winnemucca, N.V., per the police statement. They were towed to Elko so they could get another vehicle.

Once at Elko Regional Airport, they both entered the restroom and came back out. They returned to the restroom where police say Giovanni shot the child “for an unknown reason.”

He then came back out and shot himself, according to authorities.

Callan is being mourned by his family who say he was “incredibly smart, funny, and kind—wise beyond his years” in a GoFundMe set up to assist them with funeral costs and an unspecified “legal fight.”

“He had the biggest heart and the sweetest soul,” read part of the fundraiser. “He deserved so much more life, so many more laughs, and a future that was stolen far too soon.”

Giovanni was reportedly in a custody battle with Callan’s maternal grandparents, and was trying to keep the child from both the maternal grandparents and his own family, Elko police said in an updated statement.

Callan’s mother did not have custody of him but remained in touch over the years, KUTV reported.

The tragic incident occurred less than a year after Callan won third place in a school district “Father of the Year” essay contest designed to inspire students to write about how a father or a father figure shaped their lives.

A possible motive was not clear. Elko police said in their statement Giovanni was suffering from PTSD after his time in the military.

Giovanni’s father has since shared several posts on Facebook mourning both Giovanni and Callan. In one post on Monday, April 20, Frank Perez wrote Giovanni “never got the help he needed.”

In one of many posts about Callan, Frank wrote: “Callan West Perez. He loved the world.”
