A Florida politician whose body was found in her bedroom this week was killed just months after her brother, a Parkland school shooting survivor, passed away.
Nancy Metayer Bowen, Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, was found dead in her residence on Wednesday, April 1, according to a statement by the Coral Springs Police Department.
Her husband Stephen Bowen was arrested later that day in connection with her killing, per the statement.
One of Nancy’s last public Facebook posts was in December when she shared a GoFundMe announcing her brother Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer’s death.
Donovan, 26, died by suicide on Dec. 15, years after he survived the February 2018 Parkland school shooting that killed 17.
Donovan, the “baby of the Metayer family,” was a radiant child who slipped into depression and other mental health struggles after the shooting that his family says “profoundly altered the course of his life.”
In another Facebook post from the day after his passing, Nancy lovingly wrote, alongside a photo of her and Donovan, “You are the sibling who gets under my skin the most, and the one I feel I have to protect the hardest.”

A motive behind Nancy’s killing was not immediately clear. According to a complaint affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, the authorities say Steven allegedly told his uncle on Wednesday morning he “did something” to Nancy and that she was dead.
Investigators responded to the residence after the uncle notified police, and found Nancy’s body on the bed of the master bedroom, per the affidavit.
In the affidavit, the police said that Stephen allegedly told someone that he had shot Nancy three times the previous night and slept downstairs. (The person’s name was redacted, but the timing of his conversation with them matches the timing of his conversation with his uncle, as stated in the affidavit.)
Stephen allegedly told the witness he shot Nancy because he “could not take it anymore,” per the affidavit.

Nancy’s family told investigators they were not aware of any marital issues the couple were having.
On her Facebook, she shared photos of her and Stephen accompanied with loving messages.
“There’s a special kind of joy that comes with living in my purpose, feeling anchored by the love of my incredible husband Stephen Bowen,” she wrote in part of a Facebook post in September 2024.
“Three years of building, dreaming, and loving each other through everything,” she wrote in an anniversary post in November.
Stephen has been charged with premeditated murder and tampering or fabricating physical evidence, according to online court records and the affidavit.
It’s not clear if he has denied the accusations; online court records do not show attorney information or an arraignment date.
