Shaquille O’Neal offered to pay for the funeral of Jada West, a 12-year-old girl from the Atlanta suburbs who died after she collapsed following a fistfight near her bus stop.
“This story touched my heart the moment I saw it in the media,” the basketball legend said in a joint statement shared by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
“As a father, my heart goes out to Jada’s family,” O’Neal said. “No parent should ever have to bury their child, and if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it is the right thing to do. Our community must surround this family with love, support, and compassion during such a painful moment.”
The fight happened in Douglas County, and O’Neal serves as the sheriff’s community relations chief in nearby Henry County. Both counties are located outside of Atlanta.
Per the Associated Press, on March 5, a fight between West and another student from Mason Creek Middle School broke out at a bus stop after school. Three days later, West died at a hospital.

Investigators are reviewing cellphone footage of West and the other student fighting, throwing punches at one another. At first, the students taunt each other before they both place their backpacks on the ground and approach one another.
In the clip, both girls involved in the fight fall before an adult breaks them up. The video ends with West grabbing her backpack and walking away.

Police spokesman Sgt. Spencer Crawford said that emergency responders were dispatched to a call involving “a young juvenile who was in cardiac arrest laying in the street” following the fight.
“When we actually arrived, paramedics were on the scene, and they were already loading her up and performing CPR,” Crawford said. “Paramedics told us there was an adult on the scene performing CPR when they arrived.” West was then taken to the hospital.
West’s family is seeking accountability and wants to know if the bus driver could have intervened.
West’s aunt Lindsey McClendon Pettiford called her niece “the sweetest little girl you would know.” “If you want to know what love is, she definitely defines the meaning of it,” she wrote in a Facebook tribute post. The funeral for West is scheduled for Saturday, March 21.
