Shocking pictures showed his overturned Land Rover on the side of the road on Jupiter Island, north of Palm Beach, on Friday afternoon.

Cops slapped Woods with misdemeanour charges of driving under the influence, property damage and refusing to submit to a lawful test.

He spent an eight-hour stint behind bars at Martin County Jail, with police later releasing a bleary-eyed mugshot of the golf star.

Speaking out for the first time since his arrest, Woods thanked fans for their support and said he was “stepping away for a period of time”.

Issuing a statement on social media, he wrote: “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today.

“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.

“This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.

“I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

Woods, who cops said showed signs of impairment, crawled out of the passenger door after he flipped the SUV in a residential neighbourhood.

Investigators stressed they were “really not suspicious of alcohol being involved” after he blew “triple zeros” on a breathalyser.

Sheriff John Budensiek alleged Woods had tried to overtake a cleaning truck at a “high rate of speed” before clipping it and flipping his SUV.

Budensiek also said Woods had refused to take a urine test when asked.

He added: “He was co-operative but was trying not to incriminate himself. He has a right to refuse that test.

“There is a statute which he will be charged with for refusing to take that test…

“… but we will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash.”

Photos from the scene showed Woods’ black SUV on its side surrounded by several officers from the local police department and a tow truck.

Speaking out about the collision, US President Donald Trump hailed Woods as an “amazing person”.

He said: “I feel so badly. He has got some difficulty. There was an accident. That’s all I know.

“He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person – an amazing man.”

It’s unclear what speed Woods was driving at, but Budensiek said the speed limit on the road was 30 mph.

But this is not the first time Woods has been involved in car-related controversy.

In 2021, he was involved in caught up in another horrific rollover crash that left him seriously injured and fearing he’d lose a leg.

The golfing legend lost control of his SUV and hit a tree after driving more than 80mph in a 45mph zone.

In 2017, Woods also fell foul of the law when he was arrested for driving under the influence after cops caught him asleep at the wheel of his car.

Officers had noticed his vehicle parked erratically  at the side of the road with the engine running.

In 2009, Woods collided with fire hydrant, a tree, and several hedges near his Florida mansion.

He was knocked unconscious in the crash and rescued by his wife at the time, model Elin Nordegren, who smashed the windows with a golf club.
