Safe to say this video doesn’t play out how you think it would.
I’d say this isn’t something you see every day, but I can’t speak for Floridians. Those who live in the Sunshine State probably do see stuff like this all the time. As you’ve likely learned through all of the Florida Man and Florida Woman stories that go viral… it’s quite the wild state, and there’s always something going down there.
This time around, a Florida man and woman weren’t directly involved in the incident that’s going viral… but they were there to provide some commentary.
A video out of the Sunshine State (Nokomis, Florida to be exact) showing a massive alligator and a sandhill crane going toe-to-toe is currently making the rounds on the internet, and for good reason. It’s a fight that you wouldn’t ever expect, and it’s an encounter that ends in shocking fashion. And thanks to some Floridians, the face off was caught on camera.
A Florida gator (reptile, not a collegiate athlete) was sunning itself on the bank of a neighborhood pond when a sandhill crane decided that it was time for the prehistoric creature to return to the water. Why? I’d guess that the large bird had something in the area that it was trying to protect (it looks like a little one was also walking nearby), and didn’t like that the alligator was invading its space.
So in fearless fashion, the crane started walking right towards the alligator, which prompted this response from a Florida woman in the background of the video:
“HOLY SH*T!”
Really all you can say in the moment.
The crane didn’t like the vibes it was getting from the gator, so it spread out it’s wings to maximum wingspan and lowered it’s head – effectively entering into fight mode. Shockingly, the crane started backing the alligator down the bank and into the water, and the Florida man capturing it on camera couldn’t believe it:
“The bird is going right up to him… Oh my God, that bird is backing him up!”
Without much of a fight at all – maybe besides the very end – the sandhill crane aggressively encouraged the gator to return to the water. Once the bird had asserted its dominance, it brought its wings back to a tucked position and reveled in the fact that it just bossed around one of the world’s apex predators.
Check it out:
Unbelievable… does that gator not know it could easily win that fight – and get dinner in the process – with one quick chomp?
The original post of the video featured all kinds of people reacting and going wild in the comments. Funny enough, most of them just summed it up as a typical Florida occurrence, even though the video is quote the spectacle for those that don’t call the Sunshine State home:
“Those cranes are legally protected. The gator doesn’t wanna do time.”
“If I didn’t live here and understand the attitudes of both these animals I’d think this was fake. But no, this checks out.”
“Two dinosaurs.”
“That’s the most Florida thing I’ve seen all week.”
“That didn’t go like I thought it would.”
“Welcome to Florida. This is a Tuesday.”
