Alex Eala's coach gives his honest opinion on her condition after beating Leylah Fernandez in Washington

Alexandra Eala is the centre of attention wherever she goes, and whoever she plays, given the staunch following she commands.

However, as she continues to make steady improvements under the glaring and ever-scrutinising watch of the public eye, it’s worth mentioning the work that Joan Bosch is doing behind the scenes.

The coach of this Filipina phenomenon, hailing from the Rafa Nadal Academy, has been working with the 21-year-old for years now.

After all, she joined the academy at just 13, and everything she has done since bursting onto the WTA Tour has been with him by her side.

Now, speaking to Dyan Castillejo, it is Bosch who has entered into the public eye, offering his unique perspective on Alexandra Eala‘s recent success.

Joan Bosch praises Alex Eala’s performances in Washington

Chatting after Eala’s win over Leylah Fernandez in Washington, and ahead of her quarter-final showdown against Elina Svitolina, he began with an assessment of her most recent result.

Bosch admitted: “Yes, I’m super happy. She’s doing well. It’s just the start of the hard season, the US season. So, I mean, it’s a good start.

“In the second set, when you have it, you have to keep it, and for that we need more matches.”

Then asked about Eala’s mentality and whether they are conserving energy ahead of a busy summer of tennis, Bosch gave an answer ripped right out of the Nadal playbook: “Reserving the energy, no. We reserve energy, maybe the day before; okay, in practice we are more chill, but not in points. In points we cannot lose our identity and our main thing that is to go fully committed, all out.”

He concluded by discussing her condition and their mindset going forward: “Oh, she’s doing well. She has a good moment to keep going, to play more matches, to win her next match.

“I mean, she’s in the moment to enjoy tennis, now or never, and she is in her best moment, her best ranking. So we have no problems now.”

Svitolina has already discussed her upcoming match against Eala, which promises to be an enthralling clash given the youngster won their only ever meeting in Berlin earlier this year.

Alexandra Eala has already stated the importance of coach Joan Bosch

Eala has been vocal in her praise for Bosch, although questions aimed at her seldom focus on him.

Usually, it is about representing her home nation and the pressure of such staunch support. It was refreshing to hear her given the platform to sing his praises.

Chatting earlier this week, Eala admitted: “It’s super important that Joan Bosch, who is here with me, is my trusted person. He helps me feel like I’m not alone on the court. I trust him a lot, as well as my team at home: Yuke and Sandro.”

This came after Bosch’s instructions were overheard during that win over Fernandez, in which she overturned a 5-1 deficit in the second set to ensure a third set was not needed.
