It's never easy to play one of your friends": Victoria Mboko puts bond with Alexandra Eala aside for Hong Kong Open win

Alexandra Eala has exited the Hong Kong Open following a three-set loss to fellow youngster Victoria Mboko.

Despite fighting valiantly throughout the contest, Eala was unable to prevent Mboko from emerging triumphant: 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Eala defeated Katie Boulter in the Hong Kong Open first round and looked set to advance further after winning the first set against Mboko on Thursday.

However, the Filipino star was unable to hold on to her lead.

Consequently, Mboko has advanced to the quarter-finals, where she will face Washington Open finalist Anna Kalinskaya.

Alexandra Eala loses five consecutive games in the final set

This was a brutal match for Eala to lose, especially when considering the significant lead she held during the final set.

Unfortunately for the youngster, she lost five consecutive games – and the match – to Mboko.

It must be noted that Mboko – the Canadian Open champion – fought valiantly to come back from such a deficit. However, Eala’s inability to close out the contest is a concern.

This was a titanic battle, one that well surpassed the two-hour mark, and for Mboko, this victory represents a huge step forward following a difficult couple of months on Tour.

Immediately after Mboko won the match, the Sky Sports commentator said: “Quite simply, a classic.

“Victoria Mboko puff the cheeks, I would. She was 4-1 down in the final set and looked out of it. The serve was falling apart, but they both come in for the hug [at the net.]

“They have both lit up Centre Court this evening. Brilliant match. Both should be immensely proud of themselves.

“Eala’s season comes to a close. It’s been a brilliant season for her. But Mboko goes on!”

Victoria Mboko’s on-court reaction

After defeating Eala, Victoria Mboko had some kind words for her opponent in an on-court interview with Sky Sports.

Mboko said: “I want to first congratulate Alex for an amazing match. It’s never easy to play one of your friends, and I’ve known her for such a long time so that made it a little bit emotional.

“But I also want to thank everyone who came to support today.

“I know there’s so many Filipinos here who came to support Alex, and this is what this sport is all about. And I love the support you gave today, and it made the match so much more intense and super tough for me.

“So I think I really had to fight for every single point and I think it was an unbelievable match so thank you.”

Speaking about her strong form in Asia, Mboko added: “It feels unbelievable. It’s my first Asia swing, my first time in Hong Kong, so I hope to go for it all, and I really wish to push really hard until the end of the tournament.”

In last week’s Japan Open, Mboko defeated Bianca Andreescu and Eva Lys on her way to the quarter-finals, where she lost Elena Rybakina.

If Mboko defeats Kalinskaya in the next round, she will face either Maya Joint, Himeno Sakatsume or Eudice Chong.

As for Eala, her 2025 WTA Tour season has come to a close. However, she may choose to compete in WTA 125 events before the 2026 WTA Tour season begins in January 2026.
