Katie Boulter says she wanted ‘revenge’ after winning in Miami Open first round

Katie Boulter has advanced to the Miami Open second round after defeating Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Boulter, who has arguably been Britain’s best WTA player this year, beat her Spanish opponent 7-6, 6-4 in Florida.

The British star will face Clara Tauson in the second round. Tauson, seeded 17th, received an automatic bye through to the second stage.

What is stopping Katie Boulter from staying in the WTA top 20?

“A fantastic player, was already in the top 20, and she has unfortunately – we have talked about it so many times on our podcast – unfortunately, she just has the yips.”

Andrea Petkovic on the ‘Petkovic Becker’ podcast.

Yesterday’s match marked the first occasion Boulter had played Bouzas Maneiro since their close-fought contest at the 2024 US Open.

And after beating the Spaniard on Tuesday, Boulter admitted that she had been seeking ‘revenge’ against the world number 48.

Katie Boulter wanted ‘revenge’ against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro

In their first meeting at the 2024 US Open, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro defeated Katie Boulter 7-5, 7-5 in the second round.

On Tuesday, Boulter admitted that she wanted ‘revenge’ for that loss.

“Yeah, I mean, that match a few years ago kind of stung me a lot,” she told Sky Sports after the match. “I wanted revenge on that one.

“It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the draw.

“I actually let that one get away from me but I know how good a player she is, and I felt like the level and the quality of our tennis tonight I thought it was good.

“I mean, I felt like it was it was difficult I felt like I was having to hit a winner or she was going to hit one.

“So yeah, really pleased with the way I played today.”

Boulter will go into her clash with Clara Tauson having lost her one previous meeting against the Danish player.

Tauson, a finalist at the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships, defeated Boulter 6-2, 6-3 at the 2022 Concord 125k Open.

During that match, Boulter served five double faults and won only 33 per cent of her second-serve points.

She also failed to convert any of her three break-point opportunities. However, Boulter did win 70 per cent of her first serve points.

Who could Katie Boulter play in the third round?

Boulter has been in great form to start the year, culminating in a fourth career title at the Ostrava Open.

Therefore, Clara Tauson should be wary of the British star’s current level of play heading into their second-round contest in Miami.

If Boulter were to defeat Tauson, she would play Camila Osorio or Karolina Muchova in the next round.

Boulter has a 2-1 record against Osorio, last beating the Colombian at the 2026 Mexico Open.

Boulter has never played Karolina Muchova, who recently won her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open.
