MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala and Iga Swiatek are tipped for a third-round clash in the Miami Open.
Eala knocked off Poland’s Swiatek in last year’s quarterfinals in Miami, where the Filipino tennis ace made her breakthrough in the WTA.
The rematch between Eala and Swiatek is one of the anticipated matches in the tournament. But for that to happen, the two must handle their business first.
Eala, seeded 31st in the tournament, will have to hurdle her opening match first against either Laure Siegemund or Petra Marcinko before focusing on a potential round-of-32 clash with the World No. 3 Swiatek.
Swiatek, Miami’s No. 2 seed, on the other hand, takes on the winner between Magda Linette and Varvara Gracheva.
Eala pulled off a stunning sweep of Swiatek, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarters to make history as the first wildcard to beat three Grand Slam champions in the WTA before losing to Jessica Pegula in the semifinal. Swiatek then got her revenge against Eala a month later at the Madrid Open.
A lot has happened since, especially with Eala, who is now ranked No. 29 in the world.
The Miami Open main draw begins on Thursday.
