“My heart was truly put to the test… Thank you to my fellow Filipinos for empowering me.” — ALEX EALA SAVED MATCH POINT AND TURNED ABU DHABI INTO HER STAGE. The crowd thought it was over. Down 0–4, then 2–5 in the final set, Alex Eala was one point away from the exit against Aliaksandra Sasnovich — but under the Abu Dhabi lights, something snapped into place. One point became two. Two games became belief. Then came the miracle: a match point saved, a tiebreak seized, and a heart-stopping 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(5) comeback that left fans frozen in disbelief. Speaking courtside with Monica Puig, Alex admitted she had to find her fight mid-battle: “I really tried to bring back my will to compete… and when I found it, I was so proud.” Her voice cracked as she turned to the stands, thanking the Filipino community in the UAE — “My heart was truly tested… you gave me strength.” Just days earlier, she’d spoken calmly about pressure and growth, saying she’s a different, stronger player than when she first came here in 2024 — and now she’s proven it the hardest way possible. This wasn’t just a win. It was survival, belief, and a statement written point by point.

“Each round is even more of a challenge, I think it has its own unique challenges in every match, so I’ll try my best to recover and prepare for that one [quarters],” said Eala.
The Filipina ace and her Indonesian partner Janice Tjen also advanced to the quarters of the doubles event, facing Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and China’s Shuai Zhang.
“I’m so happy I can’t believe it. Grabe napasubok talaga ‘yong tibay ng dibdib ko,” said Eala. “At siguro kayo rin, kaya congrats mga kababayan. Mabuhay, maraming salamat po.”
“I just think these moments or just moments I only have dreamed about, selling out stadiums is insane, and these matches in particular, are really the ones that stick with you… I’m really happy with this win,” she added.
Eala’s presence was hardly felt early, with the world No. 109 imposing herself by jumping to an early lead and carrying it through to close out the first set.
But things turned different in the second set as Eala broke a nip-and-tuck 3-3 affair and produced splendid outings to take the last three of four games to force an extension.
