Daniil Medvedev smashes racket SEVEN times in 40-second Monte Carlo meltdown as tennis’ tantrum tyrant endures worst loss of his career

Daniil Medvedev smashed his racket seven times in an on-court meltdown as he suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat for the first time in his career.

The former world No 1 was handed a tough start to his clay-court season at the Monte Carlo Masters after being drawn against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini.

Medvedev, who has typically struggled on the surface during his career, had begun positively by forcing break points in the opening game but Berrettini ultimately held serve.

The match quickly became a one-sided contest with Berrettini winning the first set 6-0 in just 25 minutes.

Medvedev’s frustrations boiled over in the early stages of the second set, as Berrettini broke serve once again to take a 2-0 advantage.

In response, Medvedev smashed his racket on the court and was then seen throwing it in anger.

Medvedev threw the racket a further four times, with the crowd cheering each one, before eventually smashing it for a seventh and final time near his player’s bench. The meltdown lasted 40 seconds.

‘It had been coming everybody,’ the Sky Sports commentator commented in response to the outburst, before quipping ‘Yeah, I think that’s unusable’ as Medvedev was seen placing the remains of the racket into a courtside bin.

Medvedev, who was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct by the umpire, would ultimately go on to suffer the worst defeat of his career as Berrettini completed a whitewash victory.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former British star Jamie Murray admitted he was shocked by the incident and Medvedev’s display.

‘It is shocking, it shouldn’t happen… It did,’ Murray said. ‘[But] I am not sure how much effect that will have on him going forward.

‘I think he will be pretty embarrassed walking into the locker room and will probably be wanting to get off site pretty quickly.

‘He played so well in Indian Wells as well. He talks about clay not being his favourite surface and the difficulties he has on it but he won in Rome [in 2023]. If you can win in Rome, you can play on clay.

Medvedev has been in impressive form so far in 2026 but endured a nightmare start to the clay season

‘It was a big surprise to see him go down with two eggs, but fair play to Berrettini, that’s not an easy thing to do.’

Medvedev has a long history of on-court outbursts, with one of the most notable coming at the US Open last August when he was involved in a heated exchange with an umpire, contributing to a six-minute delay to his match.

The meltdown occurred as he endured a nightmare string of results at Grand Slams, winning just one match across tennis’ four most prestigious events.

A coaching change, however, saw Medvedev’s form rebound in the final months of 2025 and his upward trajectory has continued so far this season, leading to him returning to the world’s top 10.

Medvedev has won titles in Brisbane and Dubai this year, while he beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz en route to reaching the final of Indian Wells, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in a closely fought contest.

Daniil Medvedev’s Monte-Carlo Masters was over before it even started with a humiliating 6-0, 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Matteo Berrettini. He was not a happy man on court, smashing his racket onto the floor and wall amid a torrid showing from the seventh seed.

Following consecutive finals in Dubai and Indian Wells, it seemed that the Russian had turned a corner and was back to his imperious best. This run included defeating a rampant Carlos Alcaraz in California enroute to losing to Jannik Sinner in the final. However, it seems that he is back to square one with consecutive defeats.
After an early exit at the Miami Open, the former world number one was hoping for a strong start to his clay swing. This fleeting hope turned to despair and misery in a hugely humiliating result. It is the first time in his career he has been double-bageled, and the first time he has failed to make it past the second round stage at Monte-Carlo since 2018.

Medvedev loses cool on court in humiliating showing

Funnily enough, this could have been completely different. Medevdev had two break point opportunities to edge himself in front. These efforts were both fought back by a motivated Italian who would sprint into a 2-0 lead. This changed to 4-0 after a second break of serve was clinically sealed. Medvedev was left floundering, unable to touch the imperious serve of the Italian while continuing to struggle to find any form or momentum.
In the space of 25 minutes, he was one set away from being dumped out of the tournament. Berrettini was not waiting around, holding to love before confirming a fourth consecutive game won against the Medvedev serve after the former US Open champion whacked the ball into the net.
Known for an occasional outburst on court, the fans in Monaco would witness Medvedev completely lose it. He smashed it on the ground before the camera panned to him as he threw his racket just below the wall at the baseline with some force. He pictured a disgruntled figure, seemingly trudging back to his chair before hammering his hapless racket onto the ground, obliterating it.

The third time saw it spin off in another direction. He went to pick it up before again launching it onto the clay surface three more times by his chair right in the gaze of the umpire. The crowd was having fun watching, cheering when the racket hit the deck. Six times was the charm in this case as Medvedev went to put his broken racket into the bin.
He would return to the court with a fresh piece of equipment, but that did not seem to do the trick either. Berrettini dropped just two points on serve in the second set, seeing it out without even dropping a game. That is 16 games on the spin Berrettini has played in Monte-Carlo, and all 16 going his way. This follows Roberto Bautista Agut’s retirement when 4-0 down in yesterday’s first round action.
He swiftly moves through in a tremendous display which will be overshadowed by the actions of Medvedev.
