Rom Anzures, ABS-CBN News.MANILA — As Alex Eala rides her strong momentum, the Filipina tennis sensation is also hoping to translate it into glory for the Philippines in the 20th Asian Games in Japan.“The Asian Games is in my plans,” said the WTA No. 28 during Tuesday’s press conference with BPI in Makati. “It’s always an honor.”
The 21-year-old star, who is coming off a historic campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon, previously claimed bronze medals in her continental meet debut in 2023 after competing in the singles and doubles events.
But aside from seeking her first Asiad gold, what further fuels Eala is competing alongside her fellow Filipino athletes.
“I think it’s different when you play in the Asian Games,” said the 2025 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist. “The SEA Games last year was an incredible experience for me. I had so much fun, so I’m super motivated and I’m going to give my best.”
Eala added that competing for flag and country brings a different feeling compared to her stints on the WTA Tour.
“It brings a different vibe than when I compete in the WTA Tour,” she said. “I always enjoy it when I have Pinoy teammates.”
One possible hurdle, however, is that the Asian Games will coincide with the China Open, a WTA 1000 tournament.
The tennis event of the Asiad will run from September 27 to October 3, while the China Open is scheduled from September 30 to October 11.
It remains unclear which of the two Eala will prioritize, but what is certain is the Filipina is keen on finally winning an Asiad gold for the Philippines.
“You think I’m going for first round?” Eala quipped when asked about the goal she has set for herself.
