Dylan Carterās cause of death is now known.
The season 24 āThe Voiceā contestant died due to the blunt force injuriesĀ heĀ sustained from a car crashĀ in Colleton County, South Carolina,Ā TMZ reportedĀ Monday.
His death has been ruled accidental by the Colleton County coroner, who noted that Carter was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The outlet also reported that, according to law enforcement, Carter was driving a 2026 Tesla sedan solo just after 11 p.m. when it veered off the road. The car then struck a pole and a fence,Ā before overturning.
Carter later died in the hospital due to his injuries.
He was 24 years old.
Carter memorably wowed āThe Voiceā judges with his rendition of Whitney Houstonās 2009 hit āI Look to Youā ā which he dedicated to his late mother ā when he auditioned on the reality singing competition at just 20 years old.
The performance resulted in all four judges turning their chairs around to compete to coach him. The judges at the time included Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Reba McEntire and Niall Horan.
He ultimately chose McEntire as his coach, but was eliminated during the Battle Rounds of the competition.
Carterās family confirmed the news of his death Sunday, sharing that they were āheartbrokenā inĀ a statement shared on Facebook.
āAs a gifted singer, he frequently entertained our community with his performances at Town events,ā the statement read in part. āHis kindness and charm earned him immense respect, and his absence will be deeply felt.ā
āTo the loved ones and acquaintances of Dylan, we offer our sincerest condolences during this difficult period,ā the statement continued. āThe Town of Moncks Corner, its Council, and entire staff extend their deepest sympathies.ā
The family concluded, āHe was much more to our family than an entertainer, he was our friend and we are deeply saddened.ā
