A digital forensics expert hired by Bryan Kohberger‘s defense team prior to his guilty plea claims newly analyzed cell phone data suggests he was focused primarily on Madison Mogen before the 2022 University of Idaho murders.
According to a report from Chris Cuomo‘s show, Cuomo Crime Time, published on Tuesday, August 11, forensics expert Sy Ray has access to cell phone data that isn’t publicly available. That data shows that Kohberger, 31, and Mogen were at multiple places at the same time, including an apartment next door to Kohberger’s and an A&W restaurant.
As Globe previously reported, Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary in the stabbing deaths of Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. The murders took place at an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022. By accepting a plea deal, Kohberger avoided the death penalty and was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 10 years for burglary.

Last month, Kohberger filed a handwritten petition asking to withdraw his guilty plea and reopen the case. In the filing, he claimed his attorneys coerced him into accepting the plea agreement by making promises about prison conditions and warning him about life on death row. He also alleged there was evidence that had not been properly reviewed and argued that his plea was not entered voluntarily.
Prosecutors have asked the court to deny Kohberger’s request and argued there is no reason to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea. A judge has not yet ruled on the filing.
