It’s been nearly five years since Spider-Man: No Way Home absolutely obliterated our hearts as we saw Peter Parker make the ultimate sacrifice to save the multiverse. But that doesn’t mean that he’s fully done saving the day in NYC. Now he’s back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that brings Tom Holland’s Spider-Man back for another film that makes us wonder just how much more Peter Parker can go through.

Just a warning, we’re going to be taking a look at the film’s ending. So if you haven’t seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day just yet, this is your final warning, because we’re revealing everything.

Here’s the ultimate breakdown of the ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

So, what major things have happened so far?

We find out that it’s been several years since we last saw Peter and he’s been living alone at his own place and spending a lot of time fighting crime. Despite the fact that he’s been told multiple times by Detective DeWolff to take a break, he continues on.

Eventually, he bumps into Ned who is back in NYC after studying at MIT. He follows him back to his apartment, where there’s an open housewarming party. He also discovers that he’s living with MJ and the three have a small interaction together. However, Peter does not reveal his real name to them and he leaves immediately after finding out that MJ has a boyfriend.

That moment ends up being a major breaking point for him as he discovers that his arachnid DNA was starting to take over due to his heightened stress levels, causing him to lose control of his own powers. Wanting to come up with a solution, he talks to Bruce Banner who reveals his new inhibitor that keeps the Hulk from taking over. Peter discovers that there may be a way to fully suppress one part of his DNA in order to keep his arachnid DNA levels down.

At the same time, the Department of Damage Control is dealing with multiple break-ins, with the mysterious villain looking for something called V-Max. No one seemingly knows what it is, but the villain has the ability to mind control people one at a time. This causes Peter to work with the DODC to help track down who it is and stop them before they get a possibly dangerous weapon in their hands.

Which leads us to…

Peter discovering that the person behind the DODC attacks is none other than Jean Grey. He brings MJ to Frank Castle’s hideout for safekeeping after she is attacked by Jean, who pretends to be MJ to hurt Peter. Together, they are able to successfully make an inhibitor and Peter also makes an additional one to stop Jean from using her powers.

At the DODC main HQ, Jean is using a possessed Hulk to try to get into a super-secret vault although it is proving to be more difficult than she thought. While there, Frank—who is asked by MJ to go protect Peter—and Peter try to take her down. At one point, Hulk’s inhibitor breaks, causing him to lose control and Hulk to take over. Jean then takes over Frank who ignores Peter’s warnings to stay more than 30 feet away from her.

Using Frank and bombs to get into the vault, Jean is almost successful, however, she is taken down when Peter successfully plants the inhibitor on her. Before she is knocked out, she says the name, “Sarah.” DODC director Bill Metzger tells him that when Jean was taking over his body, she discovered that Sarah was a deceased co-worker of his and that it is likely why she said that name.

Peter, done with taking down Jean, heads back to Frank’s place.

Peter Parker saved the day?!

Not exactly. First, Peter discovers that he left behind his note that revealed his past connection to MJ at Frank’s. MJ has already read it, but tells him that she does not remember nor does she love him. Heartbroken, the two almost go their separate ways until MJ realizes she has no way back home. Peter takes her back safely and they even hang out with Ned a bit, even though he does not take off his mask the entire time.

Talking with MJ, Peter realizes that when someone is being taken over by Jean, they lose all their memories of that time she’s in their head. Which means, Metzger was completely lying to him about Sarah.

Back at the DODC facility, it’s revealed that Metzger has been experimenting on mutants in the hopes to find ways to replicate their powers onto their own squad. As they begin to torture Jean, she looks up at the room she is trapped in and discovers that V-Max was actually a label on an air vent and was likely the last thing that Sarah saw before she died, which is why she sent that as her final message to Jean. Mourning the loss of her sister, she ends up freezing everyone within a radius, including Ned and MJ.

Oh no! What does Peter do next?

Immune to her powers, he ends up going to the DODC to try to save Jean. He is unable to successfully make it through at first, until he officially takes off his inhibitor and allows his arachnid DNA to take over, finally allowing himself to fully accept all parts of himself.

Finally reaching Jean, she sees that she has Metzger tied in a chair and plans to kill him with shards of glass. In an effort to stop her, he opens up his mind and allows her to take a look at his memories. She sees Aunt May talk to Peter about fully accepting all parts of himself and, at one point, she takes over as him as well. Jean, finally realizing that she can be loved for who she is, surrenders. However, Frank has already fired off a gun and pointed it right at her. Peter successfully takes the bullet for her, but he is deeply wounded and is knocked unconscious.

Does Peter die?!

We find Peter in the hospital, breathing thanks to Jean taking over his body and keeping him alive. He finally wakes up and is surrounded by many notes and letters from people for Spider-Man. Frank apologizes to him and the two come up with a plan to allow Peter to leave the hospital without anyone finding out he’s Spider-Man. As he leaves, he takes in the crowd who is distracted by Frank in a Spider-Man costume waving out the window to show them that he is okay.

Jean is seen leaving the city while DODC is under investigation. Peter also comes to terms with the fact that he doesn’t have to be alone and continues with his life, although, has taken a bit of a hiatus from his superhero job in order to heal.

He bumps into Ned again in the bodega where he introduces himself to him as Peter. They do their secret handshake and Ned seemingly makes a big connection when he says Peter’s name again.

What does this mean for Spider-Man in the future?

Well, there is a post-credits scene that hints at something major happening later in the MCU. However, for now we also got a notice that “Spider-Man will return.” When exactly, we don’t really know, as he has not been announced as part of Avengers: Endgame. But, hopefully, we’ll get an update soon!
