Autopsy Reveals New Details in Fatal Crash That Claimed Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder
A tragic situation claimed the life of a young man.
The college football world was given a huge shock last month following the death of Dominiq Ponder. Reports surfaced that the Colorado quarterback was involved in a single-car accident.
Head coach Deion Sanders released a statement regarding the tragic passing of Ponder soon after the news came down. An investigation kicked off soon after the accident and has revealed shocking findings.
Dominiq Ponder Was Drunk At The Time of His Death
Late Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder reportedly had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit at the time of his fatal single-vehicle car crash. The report states Ponder’s blood-alcohol content was 0.167 g/100 mL, per USA Today.
The medical examiner also listed Ponder’s cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Boulder County Coroner’s report. His fatal accident occurred around 3 am MT on March 1. That happened one day before Colorado was set to open Spring practice.
Ponder lost control of his 2023 Tesla Model 3 while making a right-hand curve along Baseline Road in Boulder County. The 23-year-old’s Tesla drove through a guardrail, hit an electrical pole, and rolled at least once down an embankment. It would land on its wheels and catch fire. Dominiq Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation initially suspected speed as a contributing factor to the accident. But it now appears alcohol also played a significant role.
His family is now hoping it can serve as a lesson for young people to make responsible decisions. They have started a foundation in honor of Ponder to promote awareness.
During his time at Bethune-Cookman, Ponder threw for 33 yards and two interceptions. Ponder played for Georgia Tech, Bethune-Cookman, and the Colorado Buffaloes, where he was a sophomore backup.
He did not rack up any stats with the Colorado Buffaloes prior to his death
