“UNFAMILIAR TURF AND HIDDEN DANGERS: WHEN THE VENUE SHIFT BECOMES A CHAMPION’S NIGHTMARE. The temporary relocation of the Preakness to Laurel Park—departing from its traditional home at Pimlico—is increasingly suspected to be the primary reason top-tier trainers are withdrawing their stars. Sheila Curry, Chair of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, is excited to bring the event to Maryland.

She said: “Because it’s so close to us, we decided we’re going to celebrate it in a big way.

“We are going to have restaurants that are going to be serving the black-eyed susan cocktails, having Preakness-themed dinners…”

The move has been expected as The Pimlico course has been undergoing renovation work since July 2025.

It is expected to reopen by the 2027 race meaning this will be a proverbial one night stand for Laurel Park.

This year’s home has undergone some extensive work of its own.

It was purchased for nearly $50 million by the state of Maryland in January. It is expected to also undergo redevelopment into a top horse training facility.

The race will enjoy some rich history as the nearby town of Bowie has long been considered the birthplace of thoroughbred horse racing.
