Netflix recently released its take on The Addams Family with Wednesday. This spinoff focuses mainly on the eldest Addams sibling, Wednesday, who attends a school for outcasts called Nevermore, and who makes herself the main detective of a series of murders in the town of Jericho.

While the show mainly focuses on Wednesday (and even has her name), Wednesday’s best friend, Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Myers), had the biggest impact on the audience. On top of that, narratively speaking, Enid follows the typical storyline of a main character, and fans of the show believe her to be the actual protagonist of the story.

Emma Myers has one of the best performances on Wednesday. She played Enid Sinclair amazingly as the story’s most cheerful and optimistic character. Her good nature gives her the ability to befriend other characters quickly. She always believes things will work out for the best, and she expects the best of people, including her difficult and hostile roommate, Wednesday Addams.

Enid’s attitude quickly made the fans fall in love with the werewolf. This sort of energy is precisely what people look for in the main character of a show. So even though Wednesday is supposed to be the protagonist, it is easier for the audience to relate to a character like Enid. Plus, in a regular show, the awkward character would be the protagonist, but in a show like Wednesday, where everyone acts opposite, Enid would be the “awkward” character.

9Enid Has The Best Romance In The Show

From the show’s beginning, Enid has a crush on her classmate Ajax. Although they have a rocky start (because Ajax misses their date when he accidentally stones himself by looking in the mirror), they soon become a good, wholesome couple.

On the other hand, even though the show puts Wednesday in the middle of a love triangle, none of her romances are engaging. It’s difficult for the viewers to like Xavier’s resentful, stalkerish behavior, or Tyler’s evil agenda. This makes Enid’s romance the one that the audience actually roots for.

8The Show Deeply Explores Enid’s Family Problems

One of the show’s main topics is how characters have a hard time growing up in their difficult families. Tyler clearly struggles to communicate with his dad, Wednesday doesn’t relate with her mother, Bianca has to defy her mother’s evil plans, and Enid has to deal with her mother’s expectations.

While the show follows each of these storylines, one of the most central ones is the one between Enid and her family. Since Enid is a late bloomer (werewolf-wise), her mother insists on forcing Enid’s development. However, Enid stands her ground, and her family soon comes to accept her for who she is.

Enid comes from a family of werewolves. However, at the beginning of the show, the only werewolf aspect she possesses is her claws. It is apparent Enid is struggling to come into her werewolf persona, and she isn’t even sure if that’s something that’s going to happen to her.

Enid’s difficulty with her identity is easily paralleled by a coming-of-age story, mostly of a person who takes a bit longer to grow up than their peers. However, Enid accepts her pace growing up, and her werewolf abilities come at the right time. This character development makes Enid one of the greatest characters on Wednesday.

6Enid Proposes A Whole New Aesthetic For The Addams Family Canon

The Addams Family has always been known for its dark and gloomy aesthetic. While the show is primarily funny and satirical, and the characters are mostly kind and wholesome, this family prefers black clothing, loves talking about death, and feels comfortable with gruesome things.

However, Enid is the opposite of all of this. Her room, clothing, nails, and hair are colorful, and her attitude is cheerful and upbeat. Introducing this type of character in an Addams Family show is bold, but it’s also a significant development in the franchise.
