“You’re not edgy enough”: Leanne Morgan on Chuck Lorre Erasing 25 Years of Career Rejection With Sitcom Offer
Leanne Morgan reflects on how Chuck Lorre’s unexpected sitcom offer helped heal decades of rejection and redefine her comedic journey.

Leanne Morgan, the star of Chuck Lorre’s new sitcom Leanne, is opening up about how the TV producer’s offer helped her heal from years of rejection. Morgan is a renowned stand-up comedian best known for her I’m Every Woman special, which ranked in Netflix’s Top 10 comedy specials.
Co-created by Lorre and Morgan, the new sitcom follows the titular character navigating a mid-life crisis after her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. And the offer for the sitcom from Lorre himself was a surreal and validating experience for the actress, who had spent over two decades facing repeated rejections for not being edgy or unique enough.
“I really felt validated after 25 years of doing stand-up and getting a lot of nos, a lot of ‘You’re not edgy enough,’ ‘You’re too plain,” the comedian shared in a recent interview with Variety, reflecting on the moment which felt like a major turning point and long-overdue recognition of her talent.
The Story Behind ‘Leanne‘ — How a Stand-Up Special Sparked Lorre’s Next Sitcom
The foundation of Leanne Morgan and Chuck Lorre’s new sitcom was laid with the comedian’s Netflix special, I’m Every Woman, released in 2023 on the streamer. It was through this Netflix special that Lorre first encountered Morgan.
“It’s really simple: I saw her stand-up and I went, ‘Oh my God. This is an original voice,” The Big Bang Theory creator told Variety. And soon after, he was on his way to meet the actress-comedian in Knoxville.

He shared in the interview,
Her manager said, ‘Would you like to meet her? She could come visit you.’ I went, ‘You know what? I think I should go to Knoxville.’ So I went to Tennessee to spend time with her family, and they’re just wonderful people.
However, this was not the first time the 59-year-old actress had received such offers. Morgan had previously received interest from major industry names, including the Roseanne creator Matt Williams and Sony TV. But they never materialized into anything.
However, Lorre’s personal visit and his genuine belief in her talent felt different, something that she described as “crazy,” and deeply fulfilling, especially after decades of being overlooked.
Netflix, already hosting Morgan’s special, quickly expressed interest in Lorre’s plans with her. The collaboration ultimately led to the upcoming sitcom Leanne, a project rooted in Morgan’s real-life story and comedic voice.
Chuck Lorre Bets on Authenticity With Leanne Morgan
In an industry obsessed with edge and reinvention, as seen with Leanne Morgan’s constant rejections, Chuck Lorre’s decision to move ahead with a show starring the actress is a bold and refreshing turn towards authenticity.
