Fans of Game of Thrones will have the chance to revisit Westeros this coming January with a new HBO Max spin-off series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Based on George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, the series was introduced through an initial trailer yesterday that features jousting and sword fighting.
A More Grounded Series
In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the story unfolds 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and the Targaryen dragons are no longer present.

This series leans more towards the medieval aspects of Martin’s universe than its fantasy elements, featuring mud, jousts, and an emerging hero.
The official synopsis of the series highlights that “in an era where the Targaryen lineage still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet faded from collective memory, great destinies, powerful enemies, and perilous adventures await” the unlikely duo formed by Ser Duncan the Tall, and his young squire, Egg.

At the New York Comic Con stage, where the series was presented alongside Martin, Peter Claffey (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), series showrunner and co-creator Ira Parker emphasized that following Dunk’s journey in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should be “grounded.”
“He’s just trying to do something tough that he’s never done before, and I hope it will resonate with our audience,” Parker stated.
To find out more, tune in on January 19, 2026, on the streaming platform HBO Max. The season will consist of six episodes, each 30 minutes long, released weekly until the eagerly awaited finale on February 23.
