RICHARD Madeley made an epic mistake right off the bat on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – by referring to host Jeremy Clarkson as Chris Tarrant.

The Good Morning Britain host and former I’m A Celeb campmate appeared on the notoriously difficult quiz show in the name of charity, hoping to get some cash for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and Saint Francis Hospice.

He didn’t do a bad job either, though he found himself not making friends with host Jezza by calling him “Chris” at the start of his round.

During the initial £100 question ‘What type of board is traditionally used at a seancé to communicate with the dead?’, Richard clearly had his head in the game by answering: “It’s C, Chris. Ouija board. Final answer.”

He then did it again during the £200 question, answering ‘Which of these abbreviations is used when someone wants something done immediately’ with “I shall answer as soon as possible, Chris. It’s B.”

“I’m not Chris,” Jeremy responded, with laughter coming from the audience, as Richard quickly apologised and branded himself “senile”.

“This is going to be great this game!” Jeremy laughed, before playing up the gaffe by repeating the question slowly and referring to the prize pot in “guineas”.

Chris Tarrant was famously the original host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, acting as quiz host on the show from its run between 1998 and 2014.

The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm star Jeremy then took over from him when the series was rebooted in 2018.

Viewers naturally were quick to pick up on the mistake, sharing gifs of people spitting out their coffee laughing and Jeremy burying his head in his hands in response.

“Richard Madeley calling Jeremy Clarkson ‘Chris’ on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Well it’s easy to mix up Jeremy Clarkson and Chris Tarrant on looks,” joked one viewer.

“I think Richard Madeley need to go back to Specsavers,” said a second. “Jeremy Clarkson looks as much like Chris Tarrant as I do Kaleb Cooper.”

“Not Richard Madeley calling Jeremy ‘Chris;’” laughed another.

Jeremy got his own back though, and later on when Richard admitted: “The last thing Judy said to me before coming on was ‘don’t call him Chris’”, the presenter responded: “Anyway, Piers…”

While he might not have started off the strongest, Richard proved he had some serious wits about him when it came to the actual questions.

With a couple of risky gambles and difficult questions even viewers were shocked by, Richard was eventually able to walk away with a staggering £125,000 – earning fans’ approval as “one of the best celebrity stars to ever take on the game”.

Taking to Twitter to congratulate him on a job well done, one fan wrote: “Richard is one clever and thinkable guy. He doesn’t rush and thinks before answering and sometimes taking risks does make the charity £125,000 richer. Epic guy and a brilliant game.”

A second added: “Just about every TV quiz show I’ve seen has much easier questions on their celebrity version. Not the case with #whowantstobeamillionaire tonight. Kudos to Richard Madeley.”

“Fair play to Richard Madeley, that was really well played,” added a third.

Richard wasn’t the only celebrity contestant on tonight’s series, with Sunetra Sarker also taking on the hot seat with Chris… we mean, Jeremy.

She eventually landed another hefty payout with £64,000 going to Zoo Nation UK.
