Dr. McKay is in her flirting era!

After a rough go-around in season 1, Fiona Dourif’s Dr. Cassie McKay finally gets to have some fun at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

The second season sees McKay fending off suitors in the hospital, who also happen to be her patients. In episode 4, the resident takes the lead with her patient Brian (Lawrence Robinson) as he prepares to be discharged.

“How’s it going over here?” McKay asks her patient in the Thursday, Jan. 29 episode. Upon seeing her, he says, “Better now.”

“The X-ray is back on your foot and no fracture, so ACE wrap, ice, rest and elevate. You can take ibuprofen if you need it,” she continues. “If it’s too painful to bear weight, we can give you crutches for a day or two.”

“So, I won’t be seeing you again?” the patient asks. Flustered, McKay says, “As a patient, no, but it was nice meeting you, Brian.”

The doctor starts to walk away, before turning around. “I was going to check out a few of the art galleries in Lawrenceville tonight,” she tells him. He then asks her, “Have you been to the one on 40th and Butler?”

McKay tells Brian that she hasn’t been to that gallery yet, but was planning on going “maybe around 9 p.m.” He acknowledges the hint and flashes a smile, and she returns to work.

Dourif exclusively tells PEOPLE about her reaction to portraying McKay’s bashful side, particularly after the second half of the first season, which saw her character being arrested by cops and dealing with a patient’s troubled teenage son.

“I was really happy to do it,” the actress, 44, says. “I think there are a lot of women who are focused on work and then you get to middle age, like in your 40s, and you want to fill your life out a little bit. It’s vulnerable and harder to do than when you’re in your 20s.”

“So I felt very bashful myself in a lot of these scenes,” she admits. “But it was sweet to take that twirl. I was happy the show explored that with me.”

McKay shares a son with her ex-husband, as revealed in the first season. She also had a close relationship with Nurse Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks), who sometimes babysat her kid.

Dourif spoke about her personal connection to her character in an interview with PEOPLE during the first season of the medical drama.

“McKay is like me on my best day,” she said. “There’s also this fear I have. It’s like, if you guys don’t like McKay, you don’t like me.”

The Pitt season 2 is now streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes debuting Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT until the finale on April 16.
