Finn Wolfhard Teases Future IT Project After Sneaky Derry Finale Cameo

Finn Wolfhard has hinted at his involvement in a future IT project after his sneaky IT: Welcome to Derry finale cameo connected him to the series. Wolfhard made a photo cameo at the end of IT: Welcome to Derry, when Pennywise unfurled a missing poster of him in front of Marge, revealing she is his mother.
Speaking with Esquire, Wolfhard revealed that he will be involved in a future IT project following confirmation of his appearance in IT: Welcome to Derry. He explained how series creators Barbara and Andy Muschietti told him he’d be part of the project in the capacity he was. However, he also hints at something else from the franchise coming down the pipeline:
I knew that years ago, actually. When they first started thinking about that show, it was probably 2021. Barbara and Andy Muschietti both told me, “You’re involved.” Yeah, I’m connected. I think there’s something else that will come up eventually that I’m excited for people to see.
The IT: Welcome to Derry season 1 finale hinted that Pennywise’s reign of terror is far from over. The final episode confirmed the cosmic entity doesn’t perceive time, already knowing about the events in IT: Chapter Two that lead to his demise. To some extent, his consciousness is going back in time, hoping to prevent his own death.
Part of his plan involved trying to kill parents of the Losers’ Club children before they were born, which would prevent them from meeting and defeating him. However, It: Welcome to Derry‘s timeline hasn’t established yet if Pennywise is able to change the future. Even so, something involving Wolfhard’s version of Richie seems like it’s in the cards.

It’s unclear what this new project could be, considering Richie’s story ended with the original 2017 movie. Rumblings of an IT: Chapter 3 make it a possibility, especially if Pennywise is able to change the timeline, thus nullifying what the Losers did to him in the second film. It would also justify Wolfhard’s return in another addition to the franchise.
For now, the only confirmed project in development is the TV series. But, as of writing, IT: Welcome to Derry season 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed. There are plans for two more seasons of the show, though, each one seeing Pennywise go back in time 27 more years to try and prevent his future demise.

This could be where Wolfhard steps in, potentially having a physical presence, similar to Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh in the season 1 finale. With nothing in particular confirmed yet, though, it seems like it’ll be some time before his return to IT becomes a reality. It could even be in a different capacity, given his behind-the-scenes filmmaking credits.
